USB Print Server

Hello-
Does anyone have a good recommendation for a USB print server that would work well with a Canon Pixma MX300 multifunction printer?? My grandfather who lives a ways away purchased this one: »www.netgear.com/Products/PrintSe···121.aspx from Staples and was unable to get it to work, so he returned it to them and they simply stated it was not compatible with his printer.

I am more inclined to think it does work, he may have simply installed it wrong, I am just looking for ideas before I make the trek up his way to help him.

Also, being that this printer is a multifunction printer, is it true he will lose the scanning capabilities and such when using a USB print server? Better put, he will only be able to print? Thanks for the help.

It very well be what they are saying is that it is not compatible with the multi-function aspect. Most print servers are just that usb print servers and not scan or copy or fax servers.

I guess I should have asked, does the USB print server allow for the 2 way transmission that the printer would need if you were to scan a document?

No, not unless it was purpose built for that MFD.

The USB Print-server I would recommend you check-out is the 2-Port USB 2.0 Multi-Function Print & Storage Server model GMFPSU22W6 from IOGear

I do not know if the GMFPSU22W6 works with the Canon Pixma MX300 multifunction printer, however I have tried various models of MFPrinters from HP, Lexmark, and they all worked just great with this model of USB PS.

[Edit] For a list of Printers that IOGear have tested with this PS you can call (866) 946-4327

I don't know if it would work for that printer, but for our HP OfficeJet G85xi, HP only said specific JetDirect devices would network scan on it, so it is on a JetDirect 175x (USB). That worked fine until a Windows update broke the HP scan/fax utility (disallowing certain insecure file permissions). It is an old printer so HP had no updates. But it works as a printer by simply configuring a "local" TCP port and selecting that printer model. So we cannot scan with it any more, but it does color print and color copy.

Silex Technology makes specialized print servers and client software that are certified to work with Canon devices, but availability is limited and cost is relatively high. Check out the current model at the Canon e-Store: »estore.usa.canon.com/Specificati···ID=37188

It does not explicitly list the MX300, but maybe that's just because the print server costs more than the printer...
