overhill : I'll just add that some Nikon flashes have "Auto FP High-Speed Sync" and some Canon flashes have "High Speed Sync" that allow flash at shutter speeds faster than your sync speed. Instead of a single brief pulse of light, these modes force your flash to emit many bursts of light per second and create a longer pulse of light. This longer pulse allows for the proper exposure across the entire sensor, rather than just a portion. I use this mode frequently for wildlife photography and it's always enabled on my flash. The biggest downsides are reduced range and battery life due to the extra light your flash must emit.
--
Judd Patterson Photography

McSummation : This prompted me to investigate the shutter/flash on my Panasonic FZ50. It will properly expose the entire frame at 1/2000, so I suspect it uses a blade shutter, rather than a curtain pair like his demo. Sync speed is not one of the items in the specification list, either.

My old 35 mm SLR had all this, so I had looked when I first got the FZ50, but his confirmed that it doesn't matter.
