Hmm, that does not sound like the hard drive needing to be erased, rather it souds like the error is a bad driver file on the recovery disk...

When you boot up with a recovery disk, you are using it's drivers, not anything on the hard drive, yes?

Was it a software glitch, a hard drive gone bad, a memory problem, etc.?

Do you have a solid idea just what went wrong in the first place? If it is a hardware issue, that has to be addressed before worrying about the recovery disk.

Just boot to the repair disk and run a destructive repair.
