[Newsgroups] Done with Usenetserver, now with Hitnews

Well after being a customer with Usenetserver for over a year, I finally jumped ship last week. I have had it with their problems with SSL, fluctuating speeds, falsely advertised 105 day retention, and their lack of care for their customers.

I contacted UNS support many times, and gave them the benefit of the doubt as far as them trying to resolve the issues. I was on the 3 month plan, called in a few times for a partial credit and an estimate on when service would be properly restored. Nobody seemed to care or want to do anything to keep my business. After a few months of craptastic service, I finally had enough.

After reading some good reviews about Hitnews.eu here on DSLR, I decided to give them a try. I am currently on a one month plan testing out the waters, however thus far I have to admit that I am extremely satisfied. No problems maxing out my line, great customer support, and so far I am happy with their retention. I have yet to stumble across any corrupt files, or have I had to use any .PAR's which is more than I can say for UNS. They also do include free SSL for both downloads and uploads which is just fantastic.

Hitnews also accepts PayPal. I had a bit of a problem with my PayPal payment as my funds were being transferred from my bank account. The support staff activated my account even though they did not receive my payment at the time.

I think after this month I am going to sign up for their 6-month plan @ €36.00 which works out to $56.00 USD, not bad for 1/2 year worth of Usenet eh?

I hope my review is helpful to some, and I am now officially one of the many other DSLR'ers that have jumped ship from UNS. If interested Hitnews can be found at »www.hitnews.eu/english/ .

Cheers

I'm looking to sign up with them. I've used their 3 day no obligation trial and was very satisfied about the speeds. I was hesitant about giving a european outfit my cc number but realized that you can simply pay them with Paypal.

Yup usenetserver owned by highwinds is obviously back to its original issues. I just dont understand how they can have this much trouble. Ngroups right now has nothing on their status page even though there are clear issues with the us server including the need to port jump again to connect and random speed drops. Using my astraweb block account and the eu server for now, but tell ya the truth kind of sick of it even if I am only paying 10 bucks a month. I think at the end of this month I will byte the bullet and fully switch back to astraweb which when I used for my main provider before never had problems.. I am baffled how they continue to have issues like this.

I rec'd an email newsletter from Hitnews earlier today:

Through this newsletter we will inform you of the news from Hitnews.EU.

* New datacentre
A couple of weeks ago we entered our new datacentre. This allows us to
expand and handle the growing number of accounts. We already started to
expand our capacity and we've also reserved space to add retention.

* Retention
Usenet is getting more popular every day. The number of posts grow too.
Unfortunately this has caused our retention to drop a bit. We've added
disks to compensate for this but these disks are still filling. We will
have over 100 days of retention soon!
Success!
We have been online for a little over a year now so it's time to reflect
on what has happened. It's been a good year where we've learned a lot. We
have seen a lot of subscriptions and our support department received a lot
of compliments for our service. We have to admit that we're quite proud of
that.

To thank our members we have included a couponcode in this email. This
code can be used when extending an account with three months. If you use
this code the three months only cost EUR 13,00 !!!
The three month accounts are the most popular and the normal price is EUR
18,50.

This code can be used until june 1st 2008 and can be used only once per
account. A new payment will be extended to your account so you don't have
to wait for your account to expire.
COUPONCODE: DED32

I dont understand how anyone can just start a newshost like they did lol. Its not like the old days, now there is tetrabytes of data thanks to 100+ days of retention.

Anyway I never really considered hitnews because there is no US server and with the site being in another language I am a little uneasy about their support.

astraweb is quite good, most others share the same server as someone has stated the highwinds company own them.

No highwinds does not own them, but I think he was saying that a lot of the other servers are owned by highwinds.

Hope it is around in two years. Not knocking it, since I know almost nothing about Hitnews, but the thread reminds me of the Ngroups.net for $9.99 mad fling at the end of the year and now almost everyone is unhappy with it.

Edit: Sorry I said the mad fling for "Ngroup.net", I should have said "Iusenet".

Yea I honestly dont know how they can afford it being not only a new provider, but also running the backend themselves.. Ngroups has been in the business for a while and they are also reselling so i am sure they can afford to they just might not make much on the account which is why they only had it for a promo period. Ngroups isnt horrible by any means it just aggravates me because highwinds tends to be slow to solve issues. For example the latest thing has been going on for 2 weeks now. The time it was bad before the service would either be fine or working like crap for a good two months before they fixed the issues. When i was with astraweb yea they would have slight issues here and there, but most were resolved in a day or less. I know they recently had a severe issue where they lost a lot of posts so they had to transfer from the eu server causing slowdowns, but even with an issue like that it was resolved in a weeks time.

I would never sign up for a news provider especially for 2 years though. You never know the status of a server in 6 months never mind 2 years. They could fold and then not return the money for unused service. I would say 3 months is the max I would pay for at a time and thats for any service.

thats exactly it, astraweb has their own servers and their retention time span holds true almost all times I've tried.

Still happy here with my NGroups.Net Unlimited $9.99 Account (Must be one of the few). I don't use their SSL server and have not had a problem with them and their speeds.

I used UNS, then Hitnews, back to UNS etc. Hitnews has a benefit, you can share the account with someone else. But I had 20 days less real retention than on UNS. Also, was pretty slow for me in December - Jan timeframe. Now in recent testing was as good as UNS. Had a sale for $20USD for 3 months - that's half of UNS. I think I'm going to try them again, I've been having issues with UNS where parts of files just don't DL, giving nothing happing. Switch to my Hitnews acct, and done in a minute.
