Yamaha has some nice inverter type generators as well.
Probably modified square-wave output...unless the generator is rather costly (price a standalone sine-wave inverter).

Honda FTW.
I haven't seen the Yamaha's on an o-scope, but they are costly, similar to the Hondas's, so they may be true sine wave.

I have seen my Honda on a scope, and it is a clean pure sine wave.

the honda gen's are nice, but you can get a cheap (inexpensive) gen set in the 3000-3500 watt range for $300-$400 at some auto parts stores, i.e., kragen, autozone, etc. they are a little noisier than the hondas but the one I use has powered my toyhauler out in he desert for 2 seasons now. and it starts on he 1st pull.

Honda EU2000i. Great little units, weigh around 45 pounds, super quiet, and have true sine wave output. But they are pretty pricey. I paid around $900 for mine.

I was looking for a unit that could run my gas furnace if necessary, had clean output, was quiet, lightweight and fuel efficient. The Honda met all of those requirements. Yamaha has some nice inverter type generators as well.

Don't know about TV equipment, but with some medical equipment true sine wave output is said to be important.

Will a UPS run happily on a Generator?
APC suggest the generator be sized 3-5x the size of the total attached load.
It is necessary to read this carefully and understand what it is saying.

It is saying that some devices and generators can be mis-matched and result in unsatisfactory operation.

The two need to be matched correctly. A true on-line UPS will usually work better than a transfer-type but regardless, the devices must be matched and tested if used in a crucial application.

nightdesigns See Profile, exactly what kind of gear are you going to power?

Thanks for the info. I have a kill-a-watt so I'll measure the load and plan accordingly. Question: Will a UPS run happily on a Generator?

I think he meant at least.

Oh and another +1 for Honda Generators, especially for quiet portability.

Honda generators are super quiet.

I agree.

We used Hondas because they ARE so quiet.

The key to success with generators is to make sure they are loaded to about 50-60% capacity so the governor has some load to work against.
This might seem like a stupid question, but I have no experience with generators.

Do you mean to keep at least 50-60% capacity, or no more than 50-60% capacity?

Hook up a good UPS to the generator, should take care of the fluctuations.

I'm looking for a generator for work to power a bunch of TV equipment in the field. Probably looking at 1500-2000 watts. Would like something that can be easily moved by 2 people, is quiet, and most important, is consistent with the power output. Fluctuations and hiccups are not friendly to TV equipment.

Thanks.
