Your right, Matcarl. Big Ten Network HD is on the list. What's that Family HD channel? Isn't that the HD version of ABC Family channel? I'm not familiar with that channel. |

| reply to FrackHD Question for all the posters to this thread - why the clamor for adding all the HD channels ASAP? Won't a ton of the content on the HD channels to be added still be in SD or stretch 'o vision.
Here is how I see it:
HD Irrelevant: ESPNews, CNN, Weather Channel, CNBC
Filled with Stretch-O-Vision: Animal Planet, TBS, The History Channel, The Learning Channel, USA, Lifetime, Bravo, SCI FI
Extra subscription channels for which a HD channel already exists: Showtime West, Cinemax West, HBO West
Sports: Big Ten Network, Versus / Golf
Channels I know nothing about: MOJO, The Science Channel, Starz Edge, Starz Comed, Starz Kids and Family, Outdoor Channel, Smithsonian
Perhaps some of my classifications are wrong, but beyond Versus / Golf, baseball playoffs on TBS and very little original programming on Sci Fi (like BSG - that I don't watch) and other channels, I don't get why people are so amped about adding HD channels NOW. |

Original programming on USA/SciFi that I think is available in HD or in 16:9 aspect ratio / widescreen at least: Monk, Eureka, Psych, BSG (I do watch it), Burn Notice (I think), Star Trek: Enterprise, Stargate Atlantis, L&O: CI, In Plain Sight (I'm assuming) and more that I can't think of at the moment.
And of course, that list will grow over time. I'd rather get the HD channels now and watch that list than be on the sidelines any longer for the above shows. |

1 edit | reply to Hajman Hajman, I am most interested in Sci-Fi, USA and Bravo. Sci-Fi channel does not stretch, though they do show some SD content. Sci-Fi is currently airing the final season of Battlestar Galactica which is definitely in HD. I'm sure some of the other shows I watch are in HD too.
I don't know about the stretching habits of USA or Bravo, but if even 1 of the shows I watch on those channels are in non-stretched HD, then I want those HD channels as soon as possible. Seems pretty simple to me. It's not like waiting is going to make any of these channels become 100% non-stretched HD faster. In fact, many channels will never be 100% HD. They can't magically make shows that were filmed in SD become HD. |

You are more than a little off-base here. USA-HD, Sci-Fi HD are not stretch-o-vision channels. Both of them have gotten praise for a fair amount of true HD. TBS-HD started showing some real HD programming other than baseball at the beginning of April; however it is a stretch-o-vision channel.
CNN-HD - all the studio programming out of New York is in HD which would nice for watching the primary returns tonight. CNN specials have been in HD. Weather Channel is starting up their new all HD studio at the beginning of June - just in time for hurricane season but just a coincidence I'm sure .
Smithsonian is all HD. Very repetitive, but it is HD. Mojo is all HD; used to be InHD1.
yes, not everything on the missing HD channels will be HD. But a lot of the new programs people want to watch will be. People are getting frustrated because their local cable company has added some of the more useful HD channels, but nothing so far from Verizon. So rumor, speculation, and unsubstantiated posts rule the day. |

| Thanks for the corrections - I thought there would be some. However, I think you just backed up my point. Of all the channels slated to be added, very few (maybe 3/4 - USA, Sci-Fi, Versus/Golf and mahybe TBS) are in the "I need to have it in HD now and if I don't I'm going to be mad" category. |

| reply to Hajman Most HD cable channels are built around one HD program. People generally want an HD channel to watch one program. We will take TBS for an example. A lot of people only want TBS for baseball playoffs and Sunday afternoon baseball. A lot of people only want Sci Fi for Battlestar Galactica. Other people want USA for wrestling or Versus for ice hockey. They do not care if the rest of the programming is stretch o vision. If you have time to watch the stretch o vision or talk about it, you have too much time on your hands.
I have Directv and Dish Network as well as Fios, so I already have all these channels. And I only watch the HD programming that I want to watch. I did not miss the baseball playoffs in HD last year or the hockey season in HD on Versus or MLB EI in HD.
It is exciting to get the HD. I understand why folks are frustrated. I could not wait. |

Maybe you are right but I can't say that I agree with your assertion. If you are right, I guess I think that business model (building an entire channel around one HD program) and mind set (wanting an HD channel for one program) is odd and not sustainable. |

| If one person wants a channel for just one show, then another person wants a different channel for just one show, on and on, that makes little sense. It seems that if you took all these shows and put them all on one channel, you'd have plenty of time leftover. But, maybe the purpose of having channels with just a couple of "must watch" shows, is to keep those channels alive and people tuning in untill more HD programming is available.
But, as Baff said, many channels will never be SD. And, one of the reasons we have FIOS is that they offer channels that Comcast doesn't, many with lots of SD- Boomerang is one that comes to mind. Having an HD set hasn't made me forsake some of my favorite SD shows. According to the TV Shows On DVD website, older shows on DVD are quite popular, as well.
But, many people on here are into very fast paced action (more than the average viewer is), which they would like to watch in HD- hockey, tennis, golf, etc- which may be easier to follow in HD.
So, the more HD the merrier. But, as Baff said, you can't magically turn SD into HD. And there are a lot of shows in SD that will always be popular (see link). Hopefully there's room for all popular shows, no matter when they were made. Mark F.

As a boxing fan coming from DirecTV a couple of years back, it's been hard watching the fights in SD. I am sure that there are a bunch of MMA and even WWE fans that are looking forward to watching PPV events in HD! |

| reply to wmcbrine Ok, you have a point, besides an up-converting DVD player could make SD shows look better. And, maybe an HD transfer would be almost (but not quite) like "magically turning SD into HD". Which would be nice, as there are a good many shows- such as Get Smart, Mannix, Rockford Files, Space 1999, Hill Street Blues, etc.- that I'd love to see shown with near HD quality (or as close as possible).
But, I was mostly echoing what Baff said about there being a lot of SD programming out there. And, as long as people enjoy such shows, I think there always will be.
As for golf being "fast paced", I was referring to a small while ball sailing through the air, which might be easier to follow in HD.
Anyway, since I love watching HD (but not only HD), I'm for more HD, coexisting with SD, so everyone has a choice. Mark F. |

1 edit | I have to agree with you about the Golf, once you watch it in HD you wont want to watch it in SD again. The difference is almost sickening......
As far as HD programming goes, the providers are adding more and more all the time. If the content isnt available then they cant show it......Even the dreaded TBS has started to show their Prime Time shows in HD (Office, ELR, even The Family Guy looks better).......Its happening slowly, but more and more HD content will be available and will begin to filter down so that it is shown more often....For me the more HD the better... |

| reply to FrackHD CNBC HD is not irrelevant, unless you don't watch it in the first place. They use the extra real estate to pack more financial information on the screen. Definitely one of the top five channels I'm looking for.

| It is pointless to say that most channels will not have 24/7 HD content, because no one ever watches one channel all the time.
The point is that if the flagship shows you watch are in HD, then that 1 or 2 hours per week that you actually watch that channel is all that matters. |
