Considering it's already in their privacy policy that they can do it, someone saying they aren't doesn't hold much water. And as far as notification goes, that too would be the notification.

| Here is another very interesting section:
Preference Advertising. EMBARQ may use information such as the websites you visit or online searches that you conduct to deliver or facilitate the delivery of targeted advertisements. The delivery of these advertisements will be based on anonymous surfing behavior and will not include users' names, email addresses, telephone numbers, or any other Personally Identifiable Information.
You may choose to opt out of this preference advertising service. By opting out, you will continue to receive advertisements as normal; but these advertisements will be less relevant and less useful to you. If you would like to opt out, click here.
Seems to spell it out rather clearly to me. And there is an opt-out link as well. -- Give me bandwidth or give me death! »/testhistory/661871/4f240 |

»Marketers: Opt-In Would Be 'Armageddon'
Last month somebody at Embarq went on record to say they haven't rolled out their latest invasion of privacy:
»bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/0···surfing/
At Embarq, Debra Peterson, the company spokeswoman, e-mailed this statement, saying she would entertain no further questions:
Like other companies, we are evaluating behavioral marketing tools, but we have not decided whether to move forward with them. Our Privacy Policy anticipates and alerts customers to possible future use of these tools, and offers customers the opportunity to simply and quickly opt out. EMBARQ takes its customers privacy very seriously and we take every precaution to ensure information about our customers remains secure and anonymous. Our eagle-eyed sysadmin at work hasn't seen any injected ad activity yet.
But I'm near certain it's just a matter of time until we do - unless we get some laws to stop them from trashing the fourth amendmemnt. |

| said by gatorkram :I'll never understand this. Don't advertisers know we hate ads in the first place? I mean, hello? When they quit working, companies will stop spending money on advertisements. Given that there are people still to this day helping Nigerians with their banking, I wouldn't expect advertisements to go away anytime soon. |
