| [TW] Two Cable Modems Possible?
If I wanted to hook up a device like the Popcorn Hour HD player that has only ethernet can I use a second cable modem? The modem I have is in another area of the house. If so could I buy my own modem instead of one from Earthlink/RR? -- Gary in South Carolina --For a list of all the ways technology has failed to improve the quality of life, please press three. |

PhoenixDown -- Ron Paul 2008 -- Premium join:2003-06-08 Fresh Meadows, NY clubs: | You want to buy a router (wireless has wired ports) and hook that up to your cable modem.
--> [cable line] --> [cable modem] --> [Router]
[router] --> [popcorn hour] --> [computer] --> [anything else] |

| Depending on your house, you could:
a) run a wire from your router to popcorn hour. b) buy a wireless hub and connect popcorn hour to that.
I don't have popcorn hour but was looking into various media extenders and the issue with wireless seems to be that its not fast enough to support HD video. I think wireless N gear may do a good job and was planning on using that myself but I am not trying to connect to a device across the house either...
To answer your original question, you wouldn't be able to hook up a second cable modem to your existing connection. You would have to get a second cable internet line installed and that wouldn't work here either since your PC would be transmitting video across the public internet before going to the 2nd modem / popcorn hour device.
I assume you have coax cable running through the house but not cat-6 to run ethernet to your router? If thats the case, you may want to see if there are any devices/converters that would allow you to run ethernet over coax. I dont know of any off hand but thats not to say there isn't something out there. |

| Yes a wireless hub is what I am considering if the signal looks just like it was wired Ethernet all the way to the PH.
Also, the PH can take a hard disk drive so I am think of transferring content to it rather than streaming content for showing live from a PC. BTW the reports are the PH accepts pretty much every format you throw at it, even 1080p, and has HDMI out and USB in so I will also be using a WD Passport USB drive for content. -- Gary in South Carolina --For a list of all the ways technology has failed to improve the quality of life, please press three. |
