The brand new KAV2009 stops printing only from within IE7.

As an aside, I was using AVG 8.0 on my home computer but found it caused Windows Explorer to lockup for long periods of time and caused some programs to take several minutes to load. Upon removal, everything returned to normal, upon reinstall, it all went to heck, uninstall, back to normal.

In fact, I thought I mentioned that I installed SP1 as a potential fix for the problem, and it didn't help at all.

HP Tech Support mentioned that it was a Microsoft issue, but since HP is pointing at Microsoft, Microsoft will not answer the phone and points me to Dell, and Dell says it's not THEIR issue... I would tend to agree the fault lies at multiple doorsteps, if for only that EACH ONE of the companies involved were going out of their way to explain it is not THEIR FAULT.

Wouldn't you think that the companies would talk to each other now and then??

You'd also think that a company would get better Public Relations by explaing they've heard of a problem and are working on it, rather than participating on a:

I have the same printer. I've never tried printing from IE but I would assume it probably has the same problem. I would suspect Canon will resolve the issue. I can't say the same thing about HP. :)

Edit: Hum, I just tried printing a page from IE in Protected Mode from my laptop (Vista SP1 standard account) via Bluetooth and it printed just fine. There must be some other issue you're having with your Canon. Come to think of it, I have printed several invoices from IE on my XP machine too.

Nearly 99% of all print driver issues posted on these boards are related to HP printers. Buy a Canon! :) HP still makes good hardware but their entire software division should be fired. I have not had a single piece of HP hardware that did not have a serious software bug somewhere, whether is was a driver or packaged software. Running IE7 in non-protected Mode is not preferred, but neither is it a masssively fatal issue. Millions use Win9x through WinXP in non-protected mode every day.

If I were you, since it is easy enough to do, is to disable Protected Mode for IE7 until the issue is straightened out by HP. This is not Dell's responsibility, nor Microsoft. It is squarely HPs fault. This would be the practical equivalent of using a different browser.

There are two ways this can be managed:

1. If you only need to print from certain web sites, you can set IE so that it only is in non-protected mode when you visit that site.

2. Or, disable it globally for all sites.

And I sat and watched TV all last night while I waited for him to call!! ---- And he didn't call!

Actually, though I was pretty pissed, it was the most enjoyable evening I've had since last Saturday evening, when I opened the Dell Laptop box!!! (I've been working on this one problem since about an hour after opening up the laptop last Saturday!!!)

Anybody want to post a Customer Complaint number for HP, Dell, and Microsoft? At this point, I want to slap all 3 of them!!

You know, you'd think Someone would have the balls to admit to the problem!

There is not good answer as to the downsides. Protected Mode essentially runs IE in a sandbox -- no process or IE related download, script, Active-X control, .etc can modify persistently any file, registry entry, running process or service.

If you run IE in non-Protected Mode you face the same risks as would an XP user of IE7; or a Vista user running Firefox (that does not run in Protected Mode).

I will comment on the person you spoke to at HP. They promised fully Vista compliant, tested and WHSQ certified drivers for all their printer line no later then end-March 2007.

So, where are they? Forcing a user to turn off UAC or Protected Mode for IE in order to print is simply not acceptable. And the attempts to blame Microsoft for "spooler" issues is nonsense. Nothing changes when you turn off protected mode and print as far as the spooler service is concerned, other than the issue I mentioned earlier that you have to make certain your user profile TEMP folder has an appropriate low integrity setting and is named "Low". But the guts of the spooler service is not changed in any other respect.

Nor, if there were a spooler issue would any other printer work.

I consider the advice you received from HP as either woefully technically ignorant; or a flat out lie. And the workaround to turn off Protected Mode for IE a significant security loss for the end user.

The issue and its workaround by HP is unacceptable in my view, both from a security and practical standpoint. They should be ashamed.

RIES alone didn't allow it to print....

A "Run as Administrator" Since RIES DOES ALLOW Printing,
but if I look at bottom of screen, Protected Mode is off during "Run as Administrator".

If I run IE normally, without "Run as Administrator", Protected mode is ON, and it won't print...

So, Basically the problem hasn't changed...... Though now "Run as Administrator" works correctly, which it didn't during tests on page 1 of this thread.

If I want to print, I have to turn off Protected mode.

Yesterday Dell suggested to "Just turn off Protected Mode and have a Nice Day"
What's the DownSide of this?

Yes, auggy, I tried that link a couple days ago, and I also tried the x64 patch (that works in 32) that is specifically for the IE7 printing problem, with no better results. Last night HP ran a program to verify the drivers were installed correctly and it reported that they were installed, with all available patches (3 if I remember).

At this point I'm Using the MS Drivers (HP 7300 Series Printers) supplied with Vista Home Premium, NOT HP Drivers, and I get the Exact Same issues with printing: Prints fine in Word 2007, MSMail, Photo Print, but won't print in IE7 (Unless Protected Mode is disabled--and then it prints fine in IE7).

Info in this post is PRIOR TO LAST SUGGESTIONS Bcastner and auggy made. I'm at work now, will try those later.

Also going to call Dell during lunch to see if they have any Take on the issue...

My gut instinct is that HP Director is the issue, and I want to force it to completely disconnect and re-establish its ties to IE.

First, read this KB so you know what is going to happen: »support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

Second, do the RIES by click Tools, Internet Options, Advanced and clicking "Reset" at the bottom.
When RIES finishes, exit IE.
Reboot.

Open IE again.

Watch out now for disabled add-ons: "RIES disables all toolbars, browser extensions, and customizations that you install. To use any of these disabled customizations, you must selectively enable each customization through the Manage Add-ons dialog box. Some toolbars may require that two or more controls are enabled to work correctly. These toolbars have controls for the corresponding Browser Helper Object and toolbar extensions. You can easily enable all the disabled controls that are from a trusted publisher from the Manage Add-ons dialog box."

In short, the first thing to do after the Reboot is to use Tools, Add-on Manager and re-enable your add-on entries. Be sure to use the scroll bar feature to check and enable each of the three areas: add-ons currently loaded by IE, add-ons that have been used by IE, and Active-X controls.

Exit IE.
Open IE again.
Try to print.

5. Close IE. If you moved any IE Folder -- Temporary Internet Files, Favorites, Cookies, anything from its default location, put it back where it started. Open IE again and try to print.

6. Close IE.
Right click the IE icon on the Desktop, and chooose "Run as Administrator". Try to print.

Printed out an email from Microsoft Mail fine...

So crossed my fingers, and printed out from IE7 -- the posting I'm doing now on DSLR.... AND IT WON'T PRINT!!!

THERE IS NO HP SOFTWARE on this system now...

I'll try your idea next...

In any case it does not ring true to me. The internet is easily searched to find individuals in which that printer model works under Vista without disabling UAC or protected mode for IE.

And, if there was a fundamental flaw in the Vista spooler service, it would not print with protected mode disabled either.

Lets try this:

1. Delete any and all printer icons that appear in Control Panel, Printers and Faxes for this printer. Important: disconnect the printer from the computer.

2. Right click the printer driver file and choose "Run as Administrator".

3. Install as a new Local Printer. For the Port choose a generic 1284 DOT4 Port instead of USB.

4. Finish the installation, connecting the Printer when prompted.

Print a Test Page if you can.

The 7310 is set up as a network printer... Works fine under XP and Vista in Word 2007. A neighbor loaned me a Linky and I tested to see if WiFi vs Wired had anything to do with it... It doesn't, but I checked just to confirm... and test wireless prior to getting one for the home.

EDIT: Just did the search you suggested in Google.. Yep!!! That's the issue I've got!!!

I'll just have to see what the "work around" that he mentioned earlier today is... Later tonight...

The easiest short term work around is probably to install the Microsoft driver for the Deskjet 6500 series, it provides the same printing features. Use the "add printer" command, install as a LPT1: device and then after the installation complete the installation by a change of the port to the appropriate USB or network device.

If the Duplex attachment is connected, there was floating around a GDX file patch. This is a text file, in XML format, and the patch simply changed some entries related to the duplexer. I have no other details.

To my knowledge HP has been promising a new driver for the 7310 under Vista since soon after they released the original in March 2007. Microsoft as you know has nothing to do with these drivers; they are written and certified by HP alone, who does not submit drivers for Microsoft WHQL testing and certification.

By the way -- how is the printer connected? Directly by USB cable? Is the port DOT4 or USB?

And after I did he admidts that it is their problem, and at present there is NO PATCH available for this printer--Yet.
He also admitted that they have added a fix to some of the All-In-One Printers, but not this one yet...

He indicates that there might be a work around that can "get me by" until a patch is written (Patch is specifically for IE7, if I understand him).

I'm going to call them back later tonight and find out more about this "Work Around"....

Still, this (Printing) is something pretty basic, and I'm surprised it is this involved...

Some of the issues that appear often are duplex printing issues, and the ability to access a network rather than an USB connected printer by limited users.

There are many workarounds, but the notion that it is a Vista issue per se and not an HP issue per se is clear -- the ball is squarly in HP's court on this one.

There are several workarounds to issues with HP Director (called into play when printing in IE), and many have reported using the drivers for related printers to resolve various issues with the 7310.

And be certain I had the newest driver set (March, 2007 although for months it appears an update was promised with the release of SP1 for Vista).

The most common failing appears to be installing the drivers with the printer connected. This has been true for many HP USB-port models; it just does not work or at best, does not work well. The printer must be disconnected when the drivers are installed until the installation prompts for the physical connection.

But there is substantial evidence that the printer in fact works under Vista; only that there are some issues with items such as Duplexing.

The whole point of making sure there are "Low" integrity folders is to safely allow some file activity by a process being hosted by Internet Explorer. A process run in Low integrity can only read, write and access resources that are specially set to be of Low integrity. Most of the file area, all existing files, all existing process, all existing services, are of Medium to High integrity and cannot be directly manipulated by something running with only Low integrity.

The more I fight this, the more it appears that the lack of filesize of the printed image is the major part of the problem.
I'm going back to looking for "Low" again..
Gee--I wish the Search tool was more like XP. Search is finding all sorts of things that have nothing to do with "low".
It sure follows protected mode on, though..

One last thing here: Upgrading to SP1 made no change in the problem...

It's fast becoming a pain in the butt.

Wherever that storage might be, it has to have its integrity level set to Low to be able to be acessible by a program running in Protected Mode. No execeptions. A write is not possible otherwise.

Entered the command exactly as suggested, and the answer was Identical to your post.
However, the 7310 did not print. I'm still getting that flash of a printer icon at botoom right center of window, and the filesize is still not displaying in the print menu.

Edit: Have also tried setting a custom level and picking settings set for disable to Prompt, to see if I could stumble across the answer... didn't get anywhere.. reset custom setting back to medium high.

To Recreate the Needed Low Integrity Folder:

• Browse to the Temp folder of your user account, i.e. C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Temp
• Create a new folder and name it as Low

• Open a command prompt with elevated privilege and enter this command to set the LOW folder as low integrity folder:
ICACLS "%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Temp\Low" /setintegritylevel (OI)(CI)low

Messages similar to this will be seen:

processed file: C:\Users\Bill Castner\AppData\Local\Temp\Low
Successfully processed 1 files; Failed processing 0 files

You should now be able to reset protected mode for IE and be able to print.

Tipoff to all this is watch for the icon on the printer that shows up in lower right center and systray.
What's happening is the printer icon is being turned off (it flashes briefly) at the bottom of the screen....

Both printers are seen in IE Printer list, and both print in other programs, but only one prints in IE, which is V7.0.6000.16643.

I feel like a betatester....

I've created a 2nd printer selection on the one that won't print in IE, and that works the same way...

Any suggestions?
