Comcast DTV

I've also confirmed this recently with two different technicians. One at work and one at my house.

The analog "free" stuff that some people are able to sneak without a filter on the line for the basic line up will be unavailable. Just like the analog not being broadcast over the air. Comcast will stop broadcasting in analog on their lines. Digital only will be the way they are going.

So, your right. Going to need to get a box or two from Comcast. I know that the first one is "free" from them. The others are a few bucks a month to rent.

They may except for your locals which the FCC mandated cablecos must continue to provide in analog at least until 2012.

No, the FCC mandated that cablecos must provide the locals in analog UNLESS they go all digital. That is, if they have any analog stations, they must include the locals.

Now if they could only get the digital stuff to work right.

Actually, the FCC leaves it somewhat open as to how cablecos provide local broadcast signals (convert and distribute locals or provide converters to their customers) to their customers for must carry channels. Small cablecos can apply for a waiver excepting them from this requirement. I see nothing about "all digital" unless there's an additional mandate somewhere.

"In the alternative, operators may choose to operate “all-digital systems.” Under this option, operators will not be required to downconvert the signal to analog, and may provide these stations only in a digital format.

The entire rule is here:
