When are we going to get att.net mail?

My E-Mail address is @bellsouth.net. But since AT&T merged does this mean we are going to have the option of getting @att.net or something like that?

I think you can now:

1. Goto »www5.bellsouth.net
2. Click on the " Add/Manage Sub Accounts (Add an email box or create an alias)" link
3. Create email address or att.net alias to your bellsouth.net one

The guys at at&t told me that we weren't going to merge over to at&t e-mail addresses, ever. Just like they've kept their other networks.

Also, I tested the »www5.bellsouth.net information you posted. When you try to add a e-mail address, it just adds another bellsouth.net account.

You WANT to go through the hassle of changing your email????

While it is a pain to log onto the website now, not just UN/PQ but select your ATT domain as well.

Personally I am glad they HAVE allowed the old domains to still exist.

they will eventually merge the email systems and give new users @att.net addresses, however they will never (at least for a very very very very long time) force users to drop their old domains. The issues that would cause would be very troublesome, to say the least.

Imagine the outcries if the e-mail domains were merged. A lot of users would loose that address they've liked very much for a long time. After all, there can only be one john@att.net, etc. I'd hate to end up with something like john6830914@att.net for an address.

FWIW, the old, legacy SBC domains are not being retired, and customers using them (I am still 'pacbell.net') won't be forced to give them up. But, currently, new 'at&t Yahoo! HSI' customers are assigned 'sbcglobal.net' accounts, unless they choose a path, in the account activation process, which takes them to 'att.net'.

As for the former Bellsouth region; until that is merged into the 'at&t Yahoo! HSI' system, I suspect that 'bellsouth.net' will remain in effect on new account signups.

I don't know when, or even if, that is going to happen.

it'll happen eventually. at least I hope so. at&t's systems are so fragmented, I'm surprised they're saving any money at all. there seems to be little to no integration, each division is operating as a silo without any regards to the other.

To some extent, that has already happened. All 'bellsouth.net' email is handled by AT&T Worldnet Services mail hosts. All web mail log in for the legacy (unmigrated) SBC email domains has been moved to the same AT&T Worldnet web mail servers that handle 'att.net' and 'bellsouth.net' email.
...and give new users @att.net addresses...
Reportedly, new 'at&t Yahoo! HSI' subscribers, who follow the default account activation steps, are still getting 'sbcglobal.net' email addresses.

why would it matter if it's bellsouth.net or att.net?

The biggest advantage for some people is that att.net is shorter and is less likely to be misspelled than bellsouth.net?

Other than that if the same servers are handling the email it's like the great bard said, "What's in a name?".

It doesn't. But there will always some people who need to complain about something.

The real nuisance would be if old BellSouth people had to change to ATT. For some people, that would be a lot of work.

I've used my own domain for years, so I never have to deal with this.

Actually, there are some that would say it does matter.

I'd rather have my name associated with ameritech.net instead of sbc or at&t or any other ________ they adopt.

Considering that all of the gateway mail servers for the nine legacy SBC domains are under the 'prodigy.net' domain, and, apparently, managed by AT&T Internet Services (ATTIS; formerly SBCIS), it really doesn't matter.

OTOH, having one of the legacy domains in your email address does mark one as having the right to be an "Old_Grouch"!

I do like my 'pacbell.net' domain, as well. Maybe I should adopt the nym, "Ol' Sourdough".

I'll go you one better. I don't use AT&T/BellSouth email at all. For about $12.00 a year I have my own domain managed by a company that knows how to manage email.

For $12/year you're on a shared host? We got away from shared hosting solutions because they all have the same outgoing email server. This becomes a problem when they over sell their server and mr spamboy decides to start up and the server gets blacklisted.

VPS costs more, but works much better.

No arguement there. But, for my personal purposes, not business, I haven't had one problem in over a year.

Great deal then! Of course with DSL it's not as big of a deal as you have to send out via Bellsouth/ATT unless you're using a web based client.
