| Bellsouth & wireless netgear router
Hi all, long time lurker here, finally decided to register. Anyway, I've followed every tutorial on this site on how to network my bellsouth DSL model with my wireless netgear router, none have worked.
Here's whats going on: I have a netgear router, and a motorolla DSL modem (though when you go in to the setup it says netopia-2000). Anyway, I go to the router (.254) and set it to bridged ethernet. I go in to my modem, set the login information and I'm good to go.
The problem is that the internet seems to go in an out. That is, if I ping google.com, stop, ping again and repeat that about 8 times, google will be an unknown host at least once.
I'm using a Macbook and arch linux, both have the same problem.
The internet works fine when I go right to the modem. There's also routed bridge, but I read not to use that.
I've restarted all the devices in the order that the tutorials state, and like I said it works, then stops working, etc.
Any ideas anyone? Thanks, Nichos |

| I actually use netopia 3xxx routers so use this document, I do not know how true it is for a 2xxx router. »www.netopia.com/support/technote···020.html
These documents are in the 2xxx support pages, they should work with a 2xxx router

| thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, none of those shots look like my router. I did go through them but I didn't see anything different than what I'm doing. Let me quickly sum up what I'm doing, perhaps I'm missing something real simple:
i go to the DSL modem, set it to brdiged mode. That's all I do to modem.
Go to my router, set my bellsouth login information and make sure DHCP is enabled. That's all I do there.
Am I missing a step somewhere? I should say that I'm not at all opposed to the modem handling DHCP, whatever works at this point!
Thanks again Nichos |

| reply to nichos The only reason for the Netgear is to get wireless? Let the Netopia be the router it wants to be and demote the Netgear to the Wireless Access Point you wanted from the get-go.
Step one: Sign on the Netgear and disable the DHCP server.
Step two: Then address the Netgear in the Netopia's subnet but at some other address. If the Netopia is 192.168.0.254, set the Netgear to 192.168.0.253.
Step three: Connect the Netopia and the Netgear via LAN ports, (often labeled 1 - 4) and leave the Netgear's WAN (or internet) port empty forever.
Now the Netopia is doing all the routing, and the Netgear is providing Wireless access. |
