| How do my signals look?
I just moved into a new home, and I share a node with an apartment complex across the way. I'm on Premier but have not seen a single speed test above 6mbps down...upload is right where it should be at 1mbps. I don't know anything about DOCSIS signal standards...
Downstream Freq/Power: 117.000 MHz 13 dBmV Signal to Noise Ratio: 36 dB Modulation: QAM256 Upstream Freq/Power: 21.104 MHz 41 dBmV Channel Type: DOCSIS 1.x (TDMA) Symbol Rate: 2560 kSym/sec Modulation: QAM16 -- MCSE, ACSA, and a lot more |

The signal is pretty hot though which can sometims not be a good thing. You want it between 15+ to -15 with 0 being perfect.

He put an amp on the line because I have 5 outlets (even though only 2 have TVs, plus the cable modem makes three) |

| An amp for 3 outlets? Must be really low at the tap.
Try the cable modem as the only outlet connected with no amp, no splitters.
Seems like all you should need is 3 way with the cable modem on the -3.5 leg. -- Make your Sipura/PAP2 speak. »www.voipurize.com SouthWest Louisiana PC Users Group »www.swlapcug.com |

| reply to MarkyD New values with Amp removed. Note that my download speeds jumped from roughly 4mbps to 10mbps.
Downstream Freq/Power: 117.000 MHz 5 dBmV Signal to Noise Ratio: 37 dB Modulation: QAM256 Upstream Freq/Power: 24.304 MHz 34 dBmV Channel Type: DOCSIS 1.x (TDMA) Symbol Rate: 2560 kSym/sec Modulation: QAM16 Edit: Just a note, this is with the splitter still in play. I can't remove the splitter because it's inside Cox's box on the side of the house and that thing is locked up tight. I unplugged the amp from power, but I can't actually get to the amp because it's in that box as well.
Edit 2: The tap is literally in my back yard, and the drop is brand new. This neighborhood is only 4 years old, I'd be amazed if there were signal problems here already. I'm not sure why he put the amp on. |

36dB S/N is actually very good in OKC.
If you simply unplugged the power to the amp for the before and after, based upon the readings you provided the modem is not running off the amp and the levels you posted are not consistent with the conditions. You may have a problem on the main line (transmit may actually be low), you may have a bad modem, you may have something else. The numbers just don't add up for simply unplugging an amp.
The most reliable public speedtest you can run (in my experience) is speedtest.net, to the Dallas server. This will give you a pretty good idea of whether your issues lie within the Cox OKC sphere of influence. If you put things back to their original configuration and that test shows you're not getting the speeds you should be getting, you need to get a tech out to figure out what's up. And when he's there, ask him why you need the amp. |

| reply to MarkyD Don't unplug the amp and just leave it inline. Most amps don't automatically bypass, but maybe yours does.
Don't get me started on the boxes. Besides the power company for safety & fire reasons, no company is putting ornaments on my house that I can't get in. They should have nothing to hide as any filters should be at the tap. -- Make your Sipura/PAP2 speak. »www.voipurize.com SouthWest Louisiana PC Users Group »www.swlapcug.com |

Not to hijack the thread but Cox appears to have given up on the gray lock box here in Central Florida. I've witnessed several new installs where they didn't even bother with it, and I've seen others where they've left it unlocked after they leave. -- "Don't steal. The government hates competition." |

| reply to MarkyD upstream power is down to 34 today. Tech came out to check things out, and he said all my neighbors are having serious signal issues. He looked at my logs and said my modem dropped offline dozens of times last night. He's sending the line techs out to check things out.
He mentioned that things like this can sometimes go unnoticed until a savvy user moves into the neighborhood -- MCSE, ACSA, and a lot more |
