Yep. Knew that about the service, which is why my question was not region-specific. Customers elsewhere are on DOCSIS 3 circuits and presumably some are on biz service with statics. Depends on what features you turn on. Just 9mbps worth of DLSw traffic is enough to bury the CPU on a 3745.

so just 5 vlans via subinterfaces (for now)

and a few static nat translations

I had no problems hitting 50mbps with a PC-based router running Linux. I spoke with Comcast rep after rebooting my modem a couple of days ago. He says that I have the faster speed and I don't need to do anything.

If I understand correctly, even those who do not wish to pay for an upgrade should see faster speeds -- right??

Someone further back in this thread mentioned that you could not determine if you have docsis 3.0 by a speed-test.

How can I tell if I have the higher speed?? It does not 'feel' faster.

DOCSIS 3 will require a new modem.

6/1 will become 12/2... eventually.
8/2 will become 16/2... eventually.
16/2 gets nothing :(
If *we* want 22/5 or 50/10(which is DOCSIS 3), we will have to pay more and get our new modem from Comcast - when our areas get upgraded.

Pricing remains consistent, with 25 Mbps service available for $62.95 a month. Full-speed service, the so-called “Extreme 50” option, will run residential subscribers a cool $139.95 a month.

Comcast subscribers who choose not to upgrade can also expect a boost: their line speeds will double, at no charge.

Competing ISPs Time Warner, Road Runner, and others, have yet to announce substantial DOCSIS 3 plans, leaving Verizon and its fiber-to-the-curb FiOS option as the only other ISP offering wideband speeds to U.S. consumers.

In addition to upgrading its network, Comcast is in the middle of implementing a company-wide, FCC-supervised transparency program, designed to inform subscribers of the implicit limitations of their service – namely, that they are subject to a non-negotiable 250 GB monthly bandwidth allowance, even at 50 Mbps speeds.

Comcast previously found itself in hot water with the FCC after press investigators found the ISP interfering with customers’ BitTorrent connections – among other protocols – in an effort to manage customers’ excessive bandwidth usage. This plan backfired, prompting a number of class-action lawsuits and a sometimes-heated showdown between Comcast executives and FCC chairman Kevin Martin.

I was seriously hoping we would. RCN is not that big in Chicago compared to Comcast or AT&T. Also Comcast has almost always had its massive Chicago area upgraded at the beginning of the line. We got almost everything updated right away.

I asked him if he thought if could be my RCA245 modem but he didn't agree. Unfortunately I had to go due meet someone for lunch and cut the call short. I just got home and call Comcast immediately. This tech had no clue at all about the docsis 3.0 upgrade and she was instant messaging someone else for the answers to my questions. Neither her nor the person she was messaging knew what I was talking about. She told me that if my area is going to have an upgrade everything will happen by itself. So I went about this a different way and asked her if in the event of an docsis upgrade will my cable modem be compatible. She instant messaged someone the answer and I got the same thing. So basically this is a typical call to comcast. My question to you guys is. I think it varies on the modem you get. MANY of the files I download are in the 100MB or less category.
Since PowerBoost runs rather consistently here, getting 40MB of those/these files at 24-35mbps is welcomed.

The overall download times are greatly reduced - plus it's free and as Comcast intended, I'm off the network faster/sooner.
I guess it's all in how you look at it or use the connection. :)

That's been stated as a concern from day 1 of Powerboost being deployed. I've taken occasional cursory looks at the Group Line Monitors and I don't see anything that sticks out as a wide-scale latency problem that would support those concerns with Powerboost being universally deployed.

DOCSIS 3.0 can use 64QAM for the upstream. In fact it's recommended. Far better than 16QAM. This confuses me a bit - which DOCSIS revision is the modem communicating on? Also noticed that I'm on QAM256 for the D/l, and QAM64 for the upload channel. I'll post screen shots of the modem config pages if anyone's interested.

Interestingly enough after downgrading to the 22/5 Ultra service, I now get upstream and downstream powerboost. It only lasts for a few seconds, but at night it makes for some pretty impressive speedtest.net results.

I've been getting these speeds for about 6 weeks now, and before that I was getting about 30/3 powerboost. They did upgrade the upload from QAM16 to QAM64 and that got me more powerboost speed, but sustained speed has not changed. I could be wrong, and hope that I am, but Denver has always been low on their list of places to upgrade.

People who had 6Mbps (DOWN) / 1Mbps (UP) will now have 12/2. People who had 8Mbps (DOWN) / 1 or 2Mbps (UP) will now have 16/2. These speed changes should be automatic.

For faster tiers, you need to call in and order the new tiers (22/5 - $62.95(Ultra) or 50/10 - $139.95(Extreme)) which will require a new Docsis 3.0 modem. Only Ultra and Extreme require Docsis 3.0 cable modem. Powerboost will work on speed tiers up to "Ultra".

If you think your modem is out of date - call and find out if your modem's model is on Comcast's "End of Life" list. Docsis 1.0 is out of date, 1.1 is still in use but may have limitations on speed, 2.0 will not work for "Ultra" or above.

Where did you get a list like that? How about one for California :) Narrowing it down to Comcast's North Bay Network, further narrowing it down to Mendocino County.
