But I had 20 days less real retention than on UNS. Also, was pretty slow for me in December - Jan timeframe. Now in recent testing was as good as UNS. Had a sale for $20USD for 3 months - that's half of UNS. I think I'm going to try them again, I've been having issues with UNS where parts of files just don't DL, giving nothing happing.
Ryan : Yea I honestly dont know how they can afford it being not only a new provider, but also running the backend themselves.. Ngroups has been in the business for a while and they are also reselling so i am sure they can afford to they just might not make much on the account which is why they only had it for a promo period. Ngroups isnt horrible by any means it just aggravates me because highwinds tends to be slow to solve issues. For example the latest thing has been going on for 2 weeks now. The time it was bad before the service would either be fine or working like crap for a good two months before they fixed the issues. When i was with astraweb yea they would have slight issues here and there, but most were resolved in a day or less. I know they recently had a severe issue where they lost a lot of posts so they had to transfer from the eu server causing slowdowns, but even with an issue like that it was resolved in a weeks time.

I would never sign up for a news provider especially for 2 years though. You never know the status of a server in 6 months never mind 2 years. They could fold and then not return the money for unused service. I would say 3 months is the max I would pay for at a time and thats for any service.

Ryan : Yup usenetserver owned by highwinds is obviously back to its original issues. I just dont understand how they can have this much trouble. Ngroups right now has nothing on their status page even though there are clear issues with the us server including the need to port jump again to connect and random speed drops. Using my astraweb block account and the eu server for now, but tell ya the truth kind of sick of it even if I am only paying 10 bucks a month. I think at the end of this month I will byte the bullet and fully switch back to astraweb which when I used for my main provider before never had problems..
[Newsgroups] Done with Usenetserver, now with Hitnews

pilotsr : Well after being a customer with Usenetserver for over a year, I finally jumped ship last week. I have had it with their problems with SSL, fluctuating speeds, falsely advertised 105 day retention, and their lack of care for their customers.

I contacted UNS support many times, and gave them the benefit of the doubt as far as them trying to resolve the issues. I was on the 3 month plan, called in a few times for a partial credit and an estimate on when service would be properly restored. Nobody seemed to care or want to do anything to keep my business. After a few months of craptastic service, I finally had enough.

After reading some good reviews about Hitnews.eu here on DSLR, I decided to give them a try. I am currently on a one month plan testing out the waters, however thus far I have to admit that I am extremely satisfied. No problems maxing out my line, great customer support, and so far I am happy with their retention. I have yet to stumble across any corrupt files, or have I had to use any .PAR's which is more than I can say for UNS. They also do include free SSL for both downloads and uploads which is just fantastic.

Hitnews also accepts PayPal. I had a bit of a problem with my PayPal payment as my funds were being transferred from my bank account. The support staff activated my account even though they did not receive my payment at the time.

I think after this month I am going to sign up for their 6-month plan @ €36.00 which works out to $56.00 USD, not bad for 1/2 year worth of Usenet eh?

I hope my review is helpful to some, and I am now officially one of the many other DSLR'ers that have jumped ship from UNS. If interested Hitnews can be found at »www.hitnews.eu/english/ .

Cheers :)
