pcie 2.0 cards are backward compatible.Not sure about how a 16x slot and 4x slot will affect crossfire but like Stormy says you may want to check out one of the X2 cards which are like 2 video cards in one unit.
I recently upgraded from a geforce 8800 ultra oc to a geforce 9800 GX2( I have 1 pcie 16X slot ),awesome results for UT3 at 1920x1200 checking the device manager shows 2 9800 gpu's
