I've never really checked up on my usage before, since i'm unlimited. But last winter i started streaming all kinds of stuff, example TSN broadband i watched all the junior games on laptop. Lately i've been watching the CBC's feed after playoff games to see the coach/player interviews....
And the kicker from Sympatico themselves, since i'm a Center Ice subscriber with ExpressVu, i was able to stream all the NHL games as well for free.

All this is fine and great, and i have absolutely no problems viewing these, fast connection and all. It's great.
But the Center Ice from Sympatico i was burning around 2-3GB an hour watching these streams. So 30GB in a month is very easy to do with 3 people in the house, youtube, PS3, etc.

The best download rate using speedtest web site showed ~15.6Mbps down/760kBps up. I also noted that originally my line was synced at over 22000kbps (2Wire modem), until I asked Bell techs something, they looked at the line, and sync went down to 16000-odd kbps :) I guess keep your mouth shut if you know what's good for you :)

For plain vanilla file download it is a blast. But.

16Meg plan also increased my ping to the first Bell node from about 8-9 ms to 20-24ms.

Well, I played with it, watching dl speeds at ~1.6MByte/Sec, nice of course, but since I am online gamer, this increased ping just does not work for me. And I don't need mega bandwidth for download, nearly as much as I want my Fast Path back.

So I will be downgrading back to ... well, I don't know, maybe other 5Mbits ISP provider,

Why is that every year I have to threaten Bell with leaving to get competitive price??? I've been with them for 5 years, just stop fonking with me, but no... That's the main reason I feel I need to take a break from Bell until better times.

All they show is how fast can you get your web pages and smaller files.

The only realistic tests for any ISP are sustained tests over minimum of 24 hours. This means you need to use software that will download and upload large files that will use numerous protocols to and from many users/web-sites, such as Shareaza, NNTP, FTP, chat software etc.

With using such software over a period of a month you find out your upload and download limits and quality of your connection/account.

It's just not me who is receiving the 16Mpbs at the price of $42.95; my neighbors in the building I live in all received the same letter from the Office of Kevin Crull informing us that our building has been recently upgraded to fibre-optic cabling. I was told by both the CSR who placed my order for 16Mpbs on April 28th, and the two Bell Technicians who installed the service on May 2nd that 500 buildings in the principle of Toronto have been upgraded to fibre-optic cabling. As of last Friday 22 customer's have signed up for the service. These upgrades are very recent.

Don't get the wrong impression, I didn't make any special deals with Bell to get this price. It was offered to me at this ongoing price because of the upgrade Bell did to our building.

In actuality, I'm saving money on the 16Mpbs then when I was with Rogers paying $34.95 (plus taxes) for their HiSpeed Lite and receiving only 1 Mpbs and being capped at 25GB; as well, I'm further saving money over Bell Sympatico Total Internet Performance priced at $47.95 - 7 Mpbs and being capped at 60GB.

From what I understand Bell is still in the process of upgrading more buildings and this service will be offered to many more Condo/Apartment residents in the months to follow.

On my part, best speed I can receive [in this town] is 6 mbps which I get from Teksavvy.
Yeah, they are probably the best provider in this area.

To be honest, I'd rather have 5 mbps than 16 mbps. Its just cheaper to download unlimited than capped around 100 gb. Then again, I'm just one of those "5%, 15%, etc" people who downloaded "accessibly."

To sum it up, 16 mbps is an amazing speed. Its just that my family can't afford it nor receive it.

There are legitimate uses for P2P and just because you don't use it now doesn't mean you won't in the future. I don't play on-line games either and I seldom use P2P, but I am still completely against any form of throttling.

I would suggest running the test later in the evening to ensure Bell's throttling is in effect, it doesn't always start at 4pm.
