| [Speed] Comcast Cable vs Embarq DSL
I have Comcast. I used to have their standard 6mb for $34.95 but that was a promotional rate which was ending, when I called in to get different deal, I was offered 1.5mb for $24.95, so I took that.
It's not super fast, but it's faster then dial up for sure.
I can get Embarq 3.0mb for $29.95, only a few bucks more then Comcast, BUT, have to sign a year contract with them.
The Comcast guy yesterday told me I was getting 4mb and that Embarq's 3.0 would be slower... I was thinking about it today and thought he was seriously mistaken. I called back and Comcast lady today verified I am on the 1.5 mb plan.
BUT, she says that their 1.5 mb is faster then Embarq's 3.0 mb. That doesn't seem real to me. I mean, Embarq at 3.0 should be twice as fast as Comcast, no?? She said even though it seems like it will be faster, that DSL is slower then Cable.
Can anyone confirm if Cable is faster then DSL?? |

| Well, 3.0 is faster than 1.5. No question there. Dsl does have a little bit more overhead so it will be slighly slower unless embarq cap's a little higher than 3.0. Even so, do you want a contract? If you don't mind and want the higher speed. Go ahead and try them out. I'm sure there is a trial period. You can always call back comcast and try a different rep. Sometimes you get better luck with a different rep. Just be honest with them and you can get a faster speed package with someone else for $5.00 more per month. See if they offer anything back. You never know. -- When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all. |

| reply to whittibo I called a guy yesterday and kept asking him, "so there's no faster speed then the 1.5, that would be cheaper then the 6 @ $42?" he kept saying no.
The gal I talked to today, she was telling me they don't sell the 1.5, but they reserve it for people like me that had been paying the $42 and are going to cancel service, they offer the 1.5 to keep them. But they don't offer anything between the 1.5 and the 6.0. So she wouldn't do anything for me either.
I don't know that I want a 12 month contract. AT&T I 'THINK' is going to be coming in here soon, there's some big debate about AT&T in TN... I don't understand it all, so I just wait to see the bottom line. Anyway, once they get here, Comcast won't have a monopoly and AT&T might have better prices?
So DSL 1.5 and Cable 1.5 is going to be the same. So DSL 3.0 is going to be faster then DSL 1.5.
I might call Embarq and see if they have a testing period, because that year contract does bother me a bit. I am having to buy my way out of my Vonage contract because they told me it was 12 months, now they are saying it's 24, so I have to pay $40 to get out of the horrible service! |

| Overhead on dsl is a little higher vs. cable so i think you would get slightly faster speed with cable vs. dsl at 1.5 and i would not be suprised if comcast's cap was a little over 1.5. I would take cable 1.5 vs. dsl 1.5 if the price was the same. But if the pings where better on dsl, then that changes everything.
I hate contracts with a passion myself, and refuse to get one for internet service. Do you have television service with comcast or just internet? They might have a tv/internet bundle that would work too. (Throwing out ideas).
Just be careful with the whole contract thing. That scares me. (dsl = Doesn't Seem Likely.. joking.. Thats what we used to call it when i worked at at&t. well, ameritech back then.) |

| Yes, I have basic cable service with Comcast too. (which my promotional rate ends this month, so I hesitate to go from $24 to $42 on my internet, just for more speed).
Embarq 3.0 is $29.95 Comcast 1.5 is $24.95 + $3.00 modem lease
Comcast also told me that they don't have taxes on their services where as Embarq does, so my Embarq would be higher because taxes are added.
Comcast lady today told me they were working on getting a bundle that would include the basic TV cable, the 6.0 internet and a phone for $99 a month. If they do that, I would get their bundle (the phone isn't a VOIP but does use the internet connection, but goes over the phone lines... I have no clue what she was talking about) But for $99 a month, I would go with them. But she said they are just working on it, it could be up to a year or more before it actually happens.
My 1.5 isn't THAT slow, we just notice some pages open slowly, but it's not worth $20 more a month to get to the 6mb. |

| From experience having standalone DSL from Embarq, their taxes are $.78 for Internet.
I had Embarq without a contract by paying an extra $10/mo. But then if you do that you are real close to the Comcast 6MB price plan.
I recently came back to Comcast because now in MN they have 6MB download with 1MB upload speeds. |

| reply to djdanska said by djdanska :Overhead on dsl is a little higher vs. cable so i think you would get slightly faster speed with cable vs. dsl at 1.5 Embarq overprovisions their DSL connections to account for the ATM overhead. My 3.0/640 Embarq connection is provisioned as 3520/768 accordingly. |

espaeth Misanthrope Premium join:2001-04-21 Minneapolis, MN | AT&T and Embarq service markets are mutually exclusive. (your area is served by one or the other, not both) |
|
whittibo Premium join:2007-01-21 Greeneville, TN | Oh, that sucks.
So Comcast and Embarq is all I'll ever have options with then. *sigh*
So does anyone think that the Embarq 3.0 would be faster then the Comcast 1.5?? |

| said by whittibo :So does anyone think that the Embarq 3.0 would be faster then the Comcast 1.5?? It should be twice as fast, but service varies for broadband providers from market to market. In MN I find Embarq's service to be great, but if you read the Embarq forum a bunch of folks on the east coast seem to have quite a bit of trouble with the service.
The only way to know for sure is to try it and see. |

| reply to whittibo ILECs do not compete with one another. Now, you may be able to get AT&T Worldnet DSL Service right now; if they have a reseller agreement with a CLEC, such as Covad. But your loop is still maintained by Embarq. And you can't get more speed than your Embarq loop will sustain.

@comcast.net | reply to whittibo Don't know if that tier has powerboost which would make it faster or as fast for small downloads. Doesn't sound like your a gamer so it shouldn't matter but Embarq uses interleave which will increase latency. |

Embarq uses interleave which will increase latency. Unlike Qwest, Embarq will disable interleaving on your line if your stats are clean enough.

| I am not a gamer, just have 3 computers with me using one and 3 kids using the other two. It's more like emails, myspace, forums and music downloads.
I had Hughesnet before I sold my house in CA and it was always FAPed because of those stupid MySpace sites! They are hogs!
The 1.5 isn't horrible, nothing like dialup which I had for 9+ years, we just are getting tired of waiting for a page to open.
I have 1.5 from Comcast for $24.95 + $3 modem I could get 3.0 from Embarq for $29.95 with no modem costs
So it seems that for the same price, I could get twice the speed I have now.
I just can't justify spending $42.95 on internet connection when there are other "cheaper" choices. |

| reply to whittibo Oh my gosh!!!
When I called the first day and talked to the one guy, he told me I had 4Mb and that it's faster then 3.0 of Embarq. I thought about it the next day and remembered, I don't have 4.0 I have 1.5. So I called and asked someone else (trying to get both of them to give me a deal on a faster package) and I told her that the guy the day before told me I had 4.0 and she said, "we don't have a 4.0"
So he was basing my speed on my price since I pay the same as you. But I only have 1.5 for the same price.
That bothers me. I think Comcast should have one price no matter who you are, where you are.
So how did you get that? I don't suppose I can get it. |

| reply to whittibo Just a dumb question because I'm not knowledgeable about 1.5. Do you get a boost like burst of speed? Have you run any speed tests with what you have now to see what your actual speed is? I too wish all this regulatory/turf protection stuff would go away and anyone who wanted to compete for business could. I would love to see fios in the atlanta area competing so we could get 50/50 comcast super service. With att/bellsouth 3.0 service I would average 2.3-2.6 mbps or whatever the initials are. I've got comcast 8.0 office now and average 16 with bursts up to 28. Maybe it's just me, but I would just get the 6 and save .35 a day to cover the increase. But it does leave a bad taste in your mouth having to pay more for being a loyal customer when all the new customers get the good deals. Also, how much does dsl charge for install, etc...? |
