Alternative for renting another HD Box? TIVO?

I have a second HD TV that I want to use in my basement and I wanted to know if there were other alternatives to purchase rather than renting another HD Box from Verizon. Can you buy a TIVO box, not subscribe to their plan and use it like a Verizon HD Box?

The TIVO doesn't work without a subscription to the TIVO service. In addition, you will need to pay a monthly rental fee to Verizon for cable cards.

I'm in the "same boat". Refinishing our basement and wanting to get a 46" TV. However, I am not spending another $10 for a 3rd HD box ($33 total)!!! So I have a choice, use the DCT-700 and a splitter to the upstairs TV so I can get local HD channels through the QAM tuner and then the DCT 700 for the rest of the stations. This will free up the HD box upstairs and I can use it in the basement.

Or I will get a TV with a cable card slot....However, only the Mits and Pioneer makes flat panels with CC slots....bummer. Verizon should at least give one free box!!!

Here is my solution to your problem. I placed a tv in the basement that is an HDTV but I as well did not want to pay for another box. so I split the upstairs box with my tv down stairs. My problem is that I had a 25 ft Coax line already so I just used that...but you would be better off running a HDMI or Component down to that tv for a better picture and true HD. Anyway HDMI cable 25 is around 27.00 and 50ft is around 35 I think. Next you get FIOS to send you another Remote Control (hopefully for free) and then you purchase this device. »www.nextgenerationhomeproducts.com/ 32.35 delivered from amazon.com. This works great and allows you to control the box upstairs while down stairs. And I have had zero issues with it. Hope this helps. (just make sure the cable you purchase to run downstairs is in wall rated) Only limiting factor is that both tv have to watch the same channel. But if your like me...you have plenty of other tv to watch...

The tivo will work (you can watch all the channels and record) but you won't have any guide data without the tivo subscription. So if you wanted to record a show you would have to manually record it.

Tivo is your best bet. Yes there is subscription fees, but in the end I feel you will appreciate the service benefits vs fios boxes.

You get TivoToGo, tivo's can stream SD and HD between them, and many other features. We are getting our second Tivo.

Also sometimes they give out lifetime subscription specials. So that can make up for the fee.
