they will eventually merge the email systems and give new users @att.net addresses, however they will never (at least for a very very very very long time) force users to drop their old domains. The issues that would cause would be very troublesome, to say the least. |

| said by jblake :they will eventually merge the email systems... To some extent, that has already happened. All 'bellsouth.net' email is handled by AT&T Worldnet Services mail hosts. All web mail log in for the legacy (unmigrated) SBC email domains has been moved to the same AT&T Worldnet web mail servers that handle 'att.net' and 'bellsouth.net' email.
...and give new users @att.net addresses... Reportedly, new 'at&t Yahoo! HSI' subscribers, who follow the default account activation steps, are still getting 'sbcglobal.net' email addresses. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

The real nuisance would be if old BellSouth people had to change to ATT. For some people, that would be a lot of work.
I've used my own domain for years, so I never have to deal with this. -- No good deed goes unpunished. |

| Considering that all of the gateway mail servers for the nine legacy SBC domains are under the 'prodigy.net' domain, and, apparently, managed by AT&T Internet Services (ATTIS; formerly SBCIS), it really doesn't matter.
OTOH, having one of the legacy domains in your email address does mark one as having the right to be an "Old_Grouch"!
I do like my 'pacbell.net' domain, as well. Maybe I should adopt the nym, "Ol' Sourdough". -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

| For $12/year you're on a shared host? We got away from shared hosting solutions because they all have the same outgoing email server. This becomes a problem when they over sell their server and mr spamboy decides to start up and the server gets blacklisted.
VPS costs more, but works much better. |

As mikes60 points out, any mail hosting provider worth the money you pay them should accept SMTP message submission on a port other than port 25. Per RFC 2821, port 25 was originally designate for mail transfer; but another RFC reserves another port for SMTP message submission. Read RFC 2476.
I have not had to use port 25 for message submission since 'yahoo.co.jp' set up on port 587. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

Secure should be used with a grain of salt, of course. I've used 585, 465, 995 with no problems. I've settled on 465. No particular reason. -- Prop your feet up at Southeast Chat |

At one time, just after the servers for 'yahoo.com' and 'yahoo.com.au' switched over to using port 465, 'yahoo.co.jp' was still only accessible through port 587 (that has changed since then). The last time I checked, neither 'smtp.aim.com', nor 'smtp.aol.com', nor 'smtp.gmx.net' offered access through port 465. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

| Like Mike, I pay a fee for my email to be handled off AT&T's network. When I signed up port 465 wasn't open but a quick request resulted it that port being opened the same day. No complaints so far. From a notice I recieved two days ago I see that I've been purchased by a data center owner so I may be asking Mike who he uses if things go downhill. It's certainly been better than Bellsouth's email service, I don't know about AT&T servers. I haven't tried them. -- Prop your feet up at Southeast Chat |
