| [DTV] Digital TV Converter Boxes
So I guess I'm a tightwad... We decided not to get cable or satellite or FIOS TV when we bought our house 6 months ago, and now the thought of forking over an extra $60-$80/mo for something we don't use often seems pretty ridiculous. (though I'm still jonesing for a dvr!!) So we're using the antenna that's up in the attic.
I got my Digital TV converter box coupons in the mail last week, and am trying to decide which box to buy. Does anybody have firsthand experience with this stuff? What should I be looking for to differentiate between the available models? I haven't had much time to shop around yet, but at first glance they all look pretty much the same...
EDIT: here is a list of eligible converter boxes.

| reply to DFWDraco76 You will gain certain "Digital cable" like features, such as the electronic program guide, etc. with the box too. It will not be a bad purchase. |

| I seen one and was impressed. Connected to standard "rabbit ears" it picked up 26 channels. (Could not pick up any CBS). The picture was amazing and it has an on screen guide and Channel/Program ID like DirecTV and DISH has. Anyone that uses OTA broadcasts will not be disappointed. -- "The American Indians found out what happens when you don't control immigration." |

| reply to DFWDraco76 I bought two different models so far:
Magnavox model TB100MW9 WalMart for $50 No bells and whistles, just the basic tuner Has signal strength function Has on-screen program guide
Insignia model NS-DSA1 Best Buy for $60 Has volume control Can delete unwanted channels Can program remote to control you TV On/Off control Has Favorites button Has on-screen program guide Has signal strength function
I think that the Insignia is worth the extra $10 for the extra features. It seems to be a little better receiver to bring in weaker stations. |

| reply to DFWDraco76 Well I finally got around to buying a Zenith DTT900 from Circuit City yesterday. WOW! I was so afraid the old antenna we have up in the attic would need to be replaced - but we've got way more channels now than we did before, even when we weed out all the Spanish ones. And they're so clear.... I'm jazzed!
I went ahead and preordered an Echostar DTVPal; when it arrives the DTT900 will be demoted to the bedroom. -- my blog: »dfwdraco76.blogspot.com my website: »www.thelifeofbrian.info |
