 Planned 100% Coverage?

Well, it's May, and my remote terminal wasn't upgraded this year (I would think if they were going to upgrade it, it would have been done by now), so it looks like it'll be next year (or later).

My question is, when is it planned that Embarq will have 100% coverage in their territory? Last year, I heard that it was going to be by the end of 2009, but, at the current rate of things (not to mention our trashy dollar which gives the appearance of rising prices), I don't see how this is going to happen.

Is 2009 still projected, or has that date been moved back?

I wouldn't hold your breath. My family is out of range of DSL, with DSL capabilities less than a mile in either direction of them. Local Embarq techs have stated that there is no plan to increase coverage...especially with the waning economy. I really hate it for them...so close they can taste it.

And I would actually count your blessings...I'd suggest EVDO to them as it is indeed available in our area, but they have EXTREMELY shoddy reception at their location and can't even maintain a cell call connection, much less anything data related.

That's the sad thing, for me--I'm only 4,400 feet from the remote terminal....so I'm well within range, the major problem is that it just doesn't have a DSLAM.

Maybe I should say "when does Embarq plan on having 100% of its remote terminals upgraded with DSLAMs?".

Yeah, I have EVDO, but I'm not as lucky as I once was; in the beginning, it was really nice...if it was like it was when I first had it, I wouldn't be as unhappy...but now, there's frequent drops, unstable bandwidth (my downloads top out at 100 KB/s...but more commonly they range from 50-85 KB/s....and it'll fluctuate between those numbers rapidly).....packet loss has increased, online gaming is far more difficult now, and latency has increased by 25+ ms.

So yeah, I still think EVDO is a great thing, just not at my location (anymore).

Yeah I know what you mean have heard dsl will be available this year sometime, although I am not going to get my hopes up only to be let down. Maybe sooner than later hopefully. I eamiled 2 of the mods on the forums pertaining to this situation but never got a reply.

Blake 002 and all:

I sent an e mail to one of the techs who posts here and got a prompt, polite reply.

He said that DSL is not available to me but when it is,I would be the first to know. I believe him.

My concern is that they have,IN EFFECT,a public utility monopoly for land lines in my area. Their old copper lines are vestiges of when they were Centel. They seem to treat their update schedule as proprietary.

That is bad enough but worse, because of their out of date equipment,no other provider can offer DSL over their lines.

Deployment of the best, most modern fixed capitals is the most productive use. Instead of fixing their antiquated, worn out stuff, they have chosen to increase their dividend and buy back their common stock. That seems short sighted to me.

I am sorely tempted to buy one share of stock,go to their annual meeting, and ask them their update schedule.

Good luck.

excellent idea; if you do, perhaps you could also put a bug in a few people's ears about several "dry areas" that are often mentioned on this forums. :P
