| reply to billymac Re: [CATV] HD on Demand....when ?
I really do see it both ways, but in the end its just like the pay channel argument, "But they worked for years!"...
If Encrypting the QAM means more untouched HD channels I'm all for it!!!

1 edit | reply to dawk2008 I know this is a bit off topic, but does anybody know if Time Warner in NYC encrypts all the basic cable channels?
My brother has Time Warner in Los Angeles and just about all of his channels are clear QAM. He doesn't even have a cable box on his 2nd TV - he just has to search for the (decimal) channel numbers every so often as they change periodically. |

1 edit | reply to dawk2008 I prefer better quality of picture so I SUPPORT the digital upgrade and more HD channels in an uncompressed format. I tried DirecTv for approximately 3 hours, saw the poor quality of picture and canceled immediately so as not to incur a penalty charge.
I DO NOT support RCN's position on going all digital with encryption and requiring separate STB's for each TV. But I think we are beating a dead horse.. RCN has made their decision and they don't care if we like it or not. The box rental fees and extra cost programming tiers mean revenue. If others are like myself, I don't have another choice in cable companies.
A rumor .. you only get the free digital STB and special rates for 2nd and 3rd boxes if you have NO STB's currently. If you already have a DVR, HD box, etc. then you don't qualify for the free and reduced rate STB's. It appears the free STB is being offered as an appeasement for basic cable subscribers that would lose their tv programming completely. I read this elsewhere, could RCN confirm or deny this here on the forum?

1 edit | I'm Not from RCN, but I can confirm this was the deal in Chicago. You only qualified for the free and reduced pricing of STB's if you had NO STB's prior to Analog Crush. If you already had a STB (of ANY Type) you pay Standard rental fees for additional STB's. |

| I would call customer service and pursue this.
I previously had a HD tuner / DVR unit from RCN. I called ~3 months back or so when I first heard of the digital conversion and asked about the STBs. They sent me one free and then a second one for the "we're going digital" reduced rate.
I don't know if that was a mistake or not - or maybe the HD tuner / DVR didn't officially count - but talking to customer service and asking directly can't hurt. |

| reply to rcbrcb I'm not sure your case, but in my case...my HD-DVR is including in my Monthly Bundle...it does show on my bill as like $12 or so, but in reality it's "included" within the monthly bundle price ($124.99 or whatever).

| reply to dawk2008 RCN will be offering HD versions of new release movies starting Tomorrow in Chicago / Boston / NY. The library will build over time. PA and D.C. will follow suit shortly.
After we tackle new releases we will start to put in place the moving pieces to add free content as well as HD Subscription content such as HBO / MAX / etc..

Thanks again for keeping us in the loop! |

| I've noticed increased pixelation, especially on HD channels, since the addition of HD on demand. I have no idea if the two are linked or this is purely coincidental and was wondering if anyone else has noticed this?
Many of my DVR recordings now have a lot of pixelated moments, whereas they never used to...
Thanks, all. |

| reply to ShawnDC said by ShawnDC :The Golden Compass is no longer listed as HD VOD in DC. When might we start getting some HD VOD action??? That was actually an error, and I had it removed as DC and PA don't have HD yet.
However, DC and PA will launch HD on June 20th, That when new releases will start showing up in the HD format on VOD. The library will build weekly. -- Jason Nealis, Sr. Director, Video Product and Network Operations |
