Re: eBay Applecare

I need to get Apple Care for my Mac Pro, but really don't need it until February next year. But if the person you got it from is reliable, maybe I'll see if I can get it from them.
AFAIK, it's the same Apple Care as for the PowerMac G5. Is that correct?

I bought a used Mini that is under coverage until Dec, but the RAM and HD were upgraded, so I don't know if it would be worth it, as I don't have the original RAM and HD. Would Apple even look at it if it didn't have the original RAM/HD?

I'll will report to see how it goes after I receive it...

I don't know if Apple would warranty a machine that doesn't have at least the Apple stamped hard drive inside... The ram isn't marked, as far as I know. But the drive does have the Apple logo.

I should contact the guy, but IIRC he upgraded the 120GB in his Mac Book Pro, and put that drive in the Mini to replace the stock 80, so it most likely is Apple branded.
It's a Fujitsu MHW2120BH.

The Mac Pro SHOULD have the same AppleCare as the Power Mac G5, yes.
The HD is a user serviceable part in the Mac Pro, as is the RAM. Apple will just not replace the 3rd party HD/RAM if those are the source of the trouble. Otherwise the coverage is intact.

The Serial # of each computer is tied to a certain configuration, so even if that 120 dies in the guy's Mac mini they'd probably want to see a receipt for where an Apple authorized service provider installed that Apple HDD in there Course, he could always just try to bluff his way through "that's how it came, I swear!" or hope they just don't notice

I swapped the HDD in my wife's MacBook for mine (gave her my 80 for her 60) and when I sent in my MacBook they replaced the 60 with an 80 without mentioning it to me! LOL, probably figured it was a mess-up at the factory and thought I hadn't noticed.

Well, I received the AppleCare i bought off eBay today. Box was a little beat up, but it was sealed like the seller described.

I opened it up, there was an old Techtool CD (2005), so I gather this was an Applecare box from the original G4 mini's. Still, the enrollment number was accepted online, the coverage verified and my warranty now goes to August 14, 2010!

This is my first AppleCare for any Mac product that I've owned. I hope I don't have to use it, but heck it was a great deal and even if I decide to sell it, it's worth a lot more with AppleCare.

$41 is cheaper than a hard drive. Chances are yours won't last until 8/2010. Good deal...

Probably cheaper than any component in the mini if needed to be bought and replaced in an authorized service center. Applecare for the mini is $189CDN. so I think its a good deal.

$189 + 13% tax in my province, so $213 total.

Good going!
I found a similar deal on ebay (I think I paid fifty-something) last year for my mini. I also got lucky with a macbook AC on ebay for a little over $100. That one took awhile; I watched at least a dozen auctions before nailing it.

Yeah, I wish i had looked at some ebay auctions for my MacBook when it was still eligible for AC. But its been good, luckily. 2 years at the end of this month. So I may just get away with it, knock wood.

But you're right, the laptop AC's dont run cheap.

I have a bad, bad feeling that my Macbook is going to need it

dumb question...
If someone buys a computer and buys AC.
Let's assume he never needs it nor bothers to register it. Three years pass and the computer is still pristine.
He sells the AC to someone else who purchases a new computer.
Assuming that Apple still sells the original computer, theoretically, the unopened, unregistered AC can continue to be sold and resold over and over again, right?

No.

You have to register the AC with the Mac you intend to use it with WHILE the Mac is under it's original 1yr Apple warranty.

Good question. I know that, for instance, there's an iBook/Macbook AC retail package -- covers both. Problem is, the iBook would have to be new, and that's not going to happen retail. But I assume that three years may be inclusive of another macbook purchased within the three years of the original AC package, given Apple doesn't change the AC version/product number to cover a certain range of Macbooks and then release a newer version at a future point.

I believe if you purchase a Mac & AC at the same time (At least from Apple Store), it's auto-enrolled from the day of purchase.

That is also correct - if they're on the same receipt.

You get the same coverage either way. The AC service contract ends at the end of three years from computer purchase.

That's a great deal for the Mini. It's not worth the retail price but since one of mine is about to hit the one year mark I think I'll go put on my sniper suit and see what I can find...

LOL, I sniped this one with less than 5 seconds to go... Two windows, one logged in with confirm bid ready to press, the other with FireFox and a "reload every 3 seconds" extension.
