 magicJack & Hewlett Packard T5710 Thin Client

Good evening, everyone.

I've been attempting to setup my magicJack (new version) on a Hewlett Packard T5710 Thin Client (1.2GHz 256MB/256MB) and I am encountering a problem.

First, let me again thank HolmanGT for his helpful post on how to work around the USB driver issue, which was causing Windows XPe to throw a stop error when the magicJack was plugged into the T5710.

THE PROBLEM:
When I plug the magicJack into the T5710, I receive a pop-up error saying, "No output audio devices are found! Please check that your audio devices are present and/or connected, turned on, and their drivers are installed."

Behind this error dialog box, the magicJack softphone can be seen on the screen and it says that it is ready to call. However, I can't make or receive calls with the telephone plugged into the magicJack. Also, when I select Menu | Volume/Headset Control..., the dialog box indicates that Headset/Other is selected and I am unable to select the Telephone option.

Finally, I have already uninstalled the following software from the T5710:

• Citrix
• HP Session Allocation Manager
• Sygate
• TeemNT
• Windows Media Player

Does anyone have any ideas on what I can try to resolve this problem?

  Hi, everyone!

Good news! I figured out what was causing the audio device error! It was a good lesson learned and I thought I would post it here in case someone else encounters this problem.

My T5710 Thin Client doesn't have a keyboard, mouse or monitor connected to it. It's safely tucked away with three connections (power, Ethernet and telephone). The way I connect to the T5710 for management and monitoring functions is via a remote console session (RCON) from one of my other computers.

Anyway, Microsoft's Remote Desktop Client (RDC) has settings for how the client machine interacts with host machine I/O. The RDC I was using was configured (by default) to try and use the client's audio devices for host (T5710) audio I/O. I reconfigured the RDC to leave audio I/O on the host computer.

After I changed the RDC configuration and reconnected to the T5710, the T5710 behaved as though magicJack had not been installed. So, I reconnected the magicJack and went through the installation all over again. This time it functioned perfectly!

Yay! I now have 7x24 magicJack telephony! Awesome!

I had the same problem with installation. Mine was that I don't have an analog setup for my audio. I am using digital speakers. Glad you are up and running.

Hi, Hunter.

I'm glad too! I cannot believe how many more features I have with magicJack compared to my basic Verizon telephone service, which costs me USD25.00/month.

It's too bad Verizon sticks its customers when they cancel telephone service by raising their Internet access fee. My DSL starter plan, which presently costs USD14.95/month will go to USD29.95/month once I drop telephone service. If I upgrade to the full DSL service they'll raise my monthly Internet access fee to USD39.95/month effectively washing away all of my savings from canceling their telephone service. Stinkers!

The good news is that I'll have awesome calling features with magicJack for USD19.95/annum.

Well, I placed my hands on my hips, wiggled my nose, and after a neat boing sound they were gone. But, if you're not a (good) witch like me, then you'll have to use the method designed for mortals...

You need to download and run the Altiris scripts pre-designed to remove each of the undesired applications. Altiris scripts for the Hewlett Packard T5710 are located at »h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/Te···OID=1058

Remove .NET Messenger:

Ruh-roh. I'm thinking that you may need to install DirectX.

You can tell by opening up a command prompt (Start | Run, and enter CMD and press the [ENTER] key.) Then type DXDIAG [ENTER] at the command prompt. If the DirectX Diagnostic Tool appears, then you have DirectX loaded. However, if you get a message saying, "DXDIAG is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file", then DirectX is not installed.

PREREQUISITES:
- 512 MB of RAM is required.
- 512 MB of Flash memory is required.
- Microsoft Windows XP Embedded with Service Pack 2 (SP2) must be installed on
the thin client.

After DirectX has finished installing then you:
1. Plug in the magicJack device and wait until the softphone starts.
2. Go to the Windows Start menu, choose "Run...", enter "dxdiag", hit Enter. A window of dxdiag utility will appear.
3. Watch a progress bar (may be slow) in the lowermost left corner of the window. Wait until it disappears.
4. Go Thurough some of the different diagnostic test.
5. When you are through the different diagnostic test just exit the program do a commit and after your Thin Client restarts your magicJack should be up and running.

Good day to you

I was unable to intall the Directx as directed in your last posting. I received an error message Z:\36531.exe is not valid win32 application, and also i was unable to uninstall the following files: Citrix,Sygate,TeemNet, windows media player What else can I do? In Control Panel look for the HP RAMDisk Manager then adjust your RAMDisk to be 64MB .... make sure to COMMIT then restart your TC.

I'm concerned about your use of the Z:-drive to run removal or installation scripts. The Z:-drive is generally very small (in terms of space) and I recommend against using it.

I executed all of the downloaded Altiris scripts on my regular desktop P.C. (i.e. not the Thin Client.) When prompted where I would like to install each script, I selected a USB drive that I had plugged into a USB port on my desktop.

After all of the Altiris scripts were installed on the USB drive, I removed the USB drive from my desktop computer and plugged it into a USB port on the Thin Client. Then, using Windows Explorer, I navigated to each script folder on the USB drive and launched the script directly from the USB drive. In this manner, I did not need to copy or install anything to the Thin Client's precious memory.

I'm afraid that I am going to be time-challenged to provide more detailed instructions for you before Friday, femmy. I can provide you with walk-through instruction via telephone if you like. It will be faster than this medium, but telephone support will deprive others of the learning process ensuing here as you work to get your Thin Client and magicJack functioning. In any case, if you would like to work through your issues via telephone, do feel free to contact me via private message.

Now, let's get a clear view of the arena by first understanding your hardware. According to Hewlett Packard (»h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm···592.html ), the t5720 comes standard with a minimum of 512MB flash ROM so I believe that we may conclude that you're okay in that department. What about RAM? Can you tell me with how much RAM your t5720 is configured? Hewlett Packard (see link above) indicates that the RAM configurations for the t5720 are 256MB, 512MB or 1GB. If you don't have at least 512MB RAM, then we're going to need to get your RAM upgraded before we go too far down this path.

If you're uncertain how to determine how much RAM you have in your t5720, click on the Start menu and then right click on My Computer and choose Properties. You will see a dialog box very similar to the one at »www.compton.org/images/femmy1.png. We're looking for the number in the red box (in that image link), which will say something like xxx MB of RAM where xxx is an integer representing how much RAM you have available.

I think this is enough for now. We'll certainly get you through this, femmy. But, it's going to take a bit of time so please be patient.

was thinking I got a 256/256 from the detailed description, but looking at the sticker I think I got a 192/256. Still happy with the price and hopefully can get it to work with a little TLC. I actually didnt realize that there was a 192mb version until I found this thread.

The auction title clearly states that the auctioned Thin Client was a 192/256 unit.

I don't have any personal experience with the t5700.

The latest version of the magicJack software requires DirectX. When reviewing Hewlett Packard's t5700 Thin Client Download Drivers and Software, I did not see any installation scripts for DirectX, which seems problematic.

I suggest getting a (free) login at the Unofficial magicJack Forum and begin researching the feasibility of getting the latest version of magicJack software to run on your HP Compaq t5700.

As I have written in my review articles, Thin Clients are not an easy solution for magicJack. Furthermore, the future of magicJack-Thin Client compatibility is very reasonably questionable.

Lisa - Thanks for the advice.

I have a login and have posted more questions on the "unofficial" forum. Turns out that the 5700 TC is capable of running the software but needs 512/512 to handle it w/o alot of tinkering. I have tinkered a good bit and have the magicjack software running but I get a "no audio devices" error, which is common on the 5700. I'll probably end up getting the 512mb DOM module which will then allow me to add DirectX 9c which will then enable full support with the latest and greatest versions of the magicjack software. Once its working, I'll make sure I don't "enable" any updates to the DOM when magicjack pushes down their upgraded versions of the magicjack software.

With the new DirectX update to MagicJack all the HP thin clients require 512/512 and the installation of DirectX and Java (Java is only required for MJ WEB based diagnostic tools).

Without DirectX installed you are going to get the "No Audio Device" error, period. This is not common to the T5700 but to any XP system that does not have DirectX installed. There is absolutely no work around for this.

MagicJack now uses DirectX as it's primary Codec. Just exactly why it is not required for use by the headset and microphone combination I don't know. I would think both would require it, but obviously not.

For what it is worth the new DirectX update makes a significant and instantly noticeable improvement in the MagicJack audio quality. It is an update your really don't want to avoid if you have any interest in improving your general IN and Out voice quality.

Once you have followed the rules and have all the required software and memory to support the DirectX update installed on your Thin Client there is no reason to lock out future updates.

This doesn't make sense to me. DirectX is not a codec at all. If anything, magicJack developer(s) would be using DirectX for interaction with the host P.C.'s audio sub-system explicitly for controlling microphone and headset audio. It is also possible that magicJack is setting the stage for improved graphics rendering using DirectX to facilitate the softphone advertising model down-the-road.

This was not my experience at all. I didn't notice any changes in sound quality with the updated software.

One valid reason for blocking future updates is to gain control of the update process so one can evaluate whether or not the update is going to be problematic. Waiting a few days after an update has been released to see what others post in these forums isn't a bad thing to see if one has the time to battle any potential problems that may arise.

Another advantage of blocking updates would be inhibiting the update process until a time of the end-user's choosing. This could be helpful if the update does break something and it is not a particularly convenient time to be without telephone service.

My recommendation is to inhibit updates for anyone using (and managing their own) a Thin Client solution. At the very least this places control of the update process entirely in the hands of the end-user.
