At one time, they were used for remote testing (the initials stand for Maintenance Termination Unit) of the line condition up to the NID. I don't know if they still test through them, but the MTUs are disappearing one by one from the network as they are incompatible with DSL service and must be removed.

Yeah, they still show up on our MLT test here in the POTS world. Kinda nice to get a no sync/intrmntnt sync with an MTU MLT test. Usally an easy fix .
