vbulletin and most other forum software have a parser which picks up on a tag and translate it into the predefined HTML equivilent set by the admin. On these forums its usually [b] instead of but you can add whatever you want so you can add as well if thats what makes you happy.

I personally think it would be more secure and transparent to the end user.

Leave the closing right bracket off a "bquote" tag. Do you know what happens?

IT IGNORES THE OPENING BRACKET. Just as it should.

Here's an example. This post has a proper closing "/bquote" tag. Note that the lack of a closing square bracket on the opening "bquote" tag causes the text to be output as a literal.

Now here's another: a pair of square brackets whose content is not a valid symbol for square brackets. If the entire tag does not parse to a valid expression, then again it is output as a literal:

Proper HTML with all the needed tags and the lone lessthan sign shows up in Firefox 2 and MSIE 7.

How about this... I used wget to download a forum page. I'm using a post of mine that had issues and I am going to use VI to edit it and add back in the less than sign and some text after it. Firefox and MSIE should discard all the text after the lone lessthan sign, no?

If you leave out a "<" or ">", you have a syntax problem, but the browser has no parser to tell you that there's a problem, and that's how HTML works. There's no syntax checker. And regardless how you enter the HTML, a "<" and ">" are control characters - their only function is to enclose HTML control language.

Look, I am a programmer. I have been programming for 41 years. I know that the answer is NEVER "it's easy enough to do it the hard way", which is what some people ALWAYS parrot in these request discussions.

It does not matter if it is "easy enough" to do it a convoluted way - the point is that we have a computer to make things easier, not to make them more complicated.

If you write an MS Word document with a less than sign in it, and convert it to HTML, does the less than sign come out as a less than sign? Of course.

It's ridiculous anyway that we are typing arcane formatting codes into a text editing context. Justin and the other geniuses who've done absolutely amazing things with the coding of this site have got to be able to address this problem a little more intelligently than it's handled now.

It's not a matter of how difficult it is to type &lt; or &gt;. Lots of posts get cut off because the poster didn't understand how to type out the symbol. Perhaps BBR should automatically disable HTML when there is an open-close mismatch.

I've used vBulletin. They have a limited HTML clone, not real HTML, and it's a pain in the ass to do anything besides text.

Here, you just code HTML. If you muck up the HTML, learn to fix it. What you're complaining about isn't a bug, it's how HTML works.

Life sucks. This site allows us to use HTML tags like <b>bold</b>. The forum software isn't intuitive.

It's not being blocked, it's just how HTML works. It just cuts off the rest of your post without any warning. I know its to prevent HTML tags but why not figure out another way to do it where you are blocking actual tags??? or replace the sign with the &lessthan; or whatever the hell the HTML code is?

This has happened to me > 5 times already I post a thread and come back later and it makes no sense because half is missing!
