If you agreed to that term of service with a tech support rep, there is no way for them to enforce it. As a tech support rep, if a customer balks at the price of a modem, we can offer a free one if they verbally commit to one year of service. They are supposed to put it in their call notes, but there is no billing code or anything that a tech support rep can put on the account to make sure that you will be billed if you cancel before the year is up. Most likely, as long as you keep some kind of DSL service, you won't have to worry.

If you do it you'd better do it before they begin charging $5 to talk to a billing customer service individual.
