| [General] Ordering by phone and the internet
Greetings to the good folks here at AT&T forum.
So here's my situation. I am moving to a new apartment this month so I called AT&T to order a phone line and the DSL. The person I spoke to was shady from the get-go but I shrugged off and kept along with the ordering process. 1) She requested a deposit, which I have never been asked before. Is this normal?
Now I checked the AT&T website, I notice there is a free router or modem giveaway for the internet order. I even asked her if there was any promotion or special going on and she said no. WHAT THE HELL?? 2) The internet is not up yet. Can I do something about it? like call them and ask them I want to re-order it online or make it like I ordered online etc. ??
I am a poor-groom-getting married here. I need to save this money on the modem seriously. Is there anything I can do??
Thanks! -- It's not who I am underneath but what I do that defines me.- Bruce Wayne - |

| I think deposits are required when AT&T has no record of ever dealing with a customer, e.g. no credit history with them, or when people have a bad credit history with them.
The modems are supposed to be free only when online ordering is used. It is their way of inducing people to avoid using those expensive (relative to a computer program) CSRs to order DSL.
You could call back and talk to another CSR and ask for a free modem (just go for the basic modem). Say that you know it was supposed to be ordered online to be free, but you were ordering a new phone line for a new place when you ordered the DSL. Maybe the CSR will adjust the order to include one if they have a soft spot. |

Ever had telephone service from AT&T before? Been a while since I ordered new telephone service, but I recall having to pay a deposit for new service (no payment history with the company).

My initial order for DSL service was over a dial-up connection with Astragate. So it was an Internet order. Even without DSL service.

Tell them, nicely, that you would have placed the order online if you had known about the special deal. If one CSR won't help, say, "Goodbye", hang up, and try again. Or, maybe, somebody will post the number for retention. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |
