| Static IPs tied to MAC Address?
I have been using Shaw with a SOHO account since about 2004. In the past when I wanted to swap out the system I'm using as my firewall, I would just set my static IP on the WAN interface and away I'd go. It's been at least a year since I've last done this.
After searching and finding a thread that mentions this, I have the feeling Shaw has tied my static IPs to the MAC address of the card that was in my firewall over the last year.
If this is the case, why did Shaw's tech support deny that? When I called I was just told to reboot my modem and reboot my 'router' neither of which worked for me.
I suppose my questions are: Can I get Shaw to reset this? How do I get through to someone who will actually do this? Is there a point to having a business support number if I just get re-directed to the general support anyways?
Thanks for any advice. |

| The docsis modems do associate an IP address with a MAC, but by unplugging the docsis modem for about 15 seconds this releases the information and you should be able to plug and go. If this doesn't work Shaw can always re provision your modem but i have never seen it not work in all the time i was a tech,
if your firewall is behind your router you may need to power cycle that as well. |

| Okay, that makes sense. So, since my firewall sits right behind the modem (well, a switch in between it and the modem), I should have both the box and the modem powered off to start. Then after at least 15 seconds start up the modem, and then the firewall? |
