A VPN is not possible, since I am currently in Brazil, my PC in Canada is turned off and I have no way of configuring it remotely. But I appreciate the suggestion.
If you PM me some way to find your account (typically I ask for the cable modem mac from the sticker on the modem but since you're abroad that might not work for you) I can see what I can do to ensure you get notices, etc.
