Arris Modem and Dell Optiplex GX260

I am having trouble with this PC and Comcast. Just switched from at&t dsl and it was working. The modem is directly connected to the PC. The strange things is that when I connect another pc to the modem it works fine.
I have tried changing cables. I have tried buying a PCI network card several different brands. All i get is "A network cable is not connected". Here is the strange part. When I bring it to my neighbors house and connet it to their DSL with a router it works fine. The PCI network card and the onboard one. The comcast tech came out today to change the modem and it didnt matter. Same thing. No link light at all and "A network cable is disconnected". If anyone has any ideas please let me know. I have not seen this before.

Thanks in advance.

Yes its is Arris and the phones are working fine. The tech came out and switched the modem and it was the same problem. I saw him connect it to his laptop and it worked fine. However when I plug it in nothing happened at all.

Have you tried resetting the modem when you change PCs? Sounds like the second computer just isn't able to obtain a DHCP lease. If you have an Arris EMTA, hold in the reset button on the back when switching computers.

Try booting into Safemode with Networking support and see if you can get an IP.

Actually I have tried resetting the modem. I did all this when the tech was present. I haven't tried to boot into safe mode with networking because the nic doesn't even try to get an address. The modem shows no link and windows shows that a network cable is unplugged. So its not even registering that a network cable is plugged in. This happened with the on-board nic and a PCI nic. I am at a loss.

If you have another network device, like a switch or router, try plugging the Dell into that. If the Dell still says "Network Cable Unplugged" then your onboard NIC may be bad. Try picking up a NIC for a few bucks at Circuit City and see if that fixes you up.

Completely remove the backup battery from the Arris and disconnect it from the A.C. power source and turn the computer off.

Wait a few minutes, then plug the Arris back in and let it fully sync. Now power up the computer.

Any joy ?

Sometimes there are issues with the proper functioning of the reset buttons with the Arris telephony modems.

You should get a router so that you don't have to worry about powercycling the modem each and every time that you want to change the device that is being directly connected to it.

I have already tried that. Explained earlier in the thread. I thought the onboard NIC was bad. Bought a PCI NIC card and the same thing happened.

This was done when the tech was here. We unplugged the modem and took out the battery. No Dice. Still cable unplugged.

Well then I'm sorry for the redundant post, but you didn't elaborate on that

If your original DSL required the use of PPPoE did you remove that from the network card properties?

But they stated that they purchased a new and different PCI adapter...
