 [Other] golf swing basics

just a quick question, when your addressing the club to the ball do you want to put your hands near your front leg so the club face sits on the ball square?

sorry its kind hard to ask the question and describe it correctly

No. Where is the ball positioned in relation to your stance?

Generally, not that far forward for all shots. Different strokes for different folks. It will depend on club in hand. For a "neutral" swing (not tryng to cut or fade), the genereral rule is "the lower the loft, the more forward the ball is in your stance". That being said, the club face should be perpendicular to the desired direction of the ball at address. So if the ball is forward, your hands will be a little bit forward. Likewise, if the ball is back, your hands will be a little bit back.

With irons, after adress, at the start of the swing, it is not unusual to see a golfer push the hands forward ever so slightly the instant before taking the club into the back swing, as this can promote a clean, downward strike of the ball.

I'm offended... I only see one spelling mistake. Of course, I haven't had any coffee yet, either.

This isn't copied from anywhere, it is just what I have picked up as basic pointers over the years as a struggling 10 handicapper. There are no hard and fast techniques; just basic techniques and tenets that golfer use and instructors teach.

The biggest lesson I have learned? Playing more often improves your game.

Slightly different positioning for the different clubs.

For a driver, most people want the ball about where their left heel is (for a right handed golfer). You want to 'stay behind' the ball with a driver, so you have your weight on your right leg when you bring the club back.

For other clubs you'll move the ball back towards your right foot, though usually no further than halfway between your feet. Depends on the club you're using, how the ball is lying, and what kind of shot you're trying to hit.

Pick up a Golf or Golf Digest magazine for detailed photos of how the pros swing and how the big name teachers teach people to swing.

footballdude has it right, it depends on the club, lie, and desired shot.

But as a general rule you want your hands even or just a minute amount behind the ball with a driver because you are trying to catch the ball with a level swing.

With yours irons you want your hands slightly ahead of the ball but not extreme. This is because you want to strike the ball with a decending blow catching the ball first and then the turf taking a divot.

The correct ball position will put your hands in the correct spot generally. With a driver, as said start out with the ball off your left (for right handed golfer) instep. This should put your left hand even with the ball. From there gradually move the ball back in 1/2" or so increments for each club dropped. Ending with a wedge my ball position is somewhere around middle of stance. A 5 iron would be about 2-3 inches behind my left instep. As you move the ball back your hands will gradually stay ahead of the ball, necessary for the downward strike for an iron.

My advice would be to get a lesson and learn the proper fundamentals. Golf is much easier to learn when you know the correct fundamentals/technique.

Edit found two photos of Ernie Els. He is one of the most fundamentally sound pros there is and he has a similar body type to mine so I tried to copy his setup growing up and learning the game.

I can do anything Ernie Els does. Fades, draws, lay ups, backspin, etc... The only difference is he knows when he's doing it and I don't.

Yeah, but I believe in cutting to the chase-- separating wheat from chaff, etc.

Just the kinda guy I am . . .

Besides-- then you spoil the surprise!
