PLZ CLOSE

Alright guys, When they came and hooked up my service, we got a ZHONE modem. I called and asked for a speedstream. Well we just got one in the mail. A modem, ethernet cable, data cable, some kinda USB cable, a big phone jack lookn thing(says line conditioner), and a couple of smaller ones.
Ok, what do I need to do to get this going?? just plug in and go, or what?? ANY and ALL help is greatly appreciated!!!
It jus seems like i remeber seeing something about this thing needed to be provisioned or something..

My understanding is that the service is provisioned, the modem itself is not. The modem is capable of multiple speeds. If I'm wrong, hope someone will say so.

alright, cool & thnx...but I put dsl cable in modem, then the ethernet cable, the plugged in the power cord, and I couldn't connect to the internet.
I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the speedstream not working, but when I called to ask for the speedstream of course I got India!!! I'm sure he just sent it(or had it sent). but like when we 1st got service, WS had to call us and get the MAC address. Maybe they don't have it off this modem either?!? and thats the problem?!? i'm not sure why it won't work.
Any suggestions???

there is an instruction sheet in the box that tells you how to get it going and how to sign on.

Did you run the CD? Did you set up your user name and password in the PPPoE?

Open IE and go to 192.168.254.254. The username and password are admin/admin. Once that opens, go to set up and enter your username (with @windstream.net) and password. That should get it going if you were up before.

The filters go on every phone line you have hooked up to a wall jack. Jack labeled phone, phone. Jack labeled DSL, DSL modem. If a phone does not have the filter on it causes interference and you will hear the modem noise. The 4200 is set with a temp windstream username and password. 1st hook directly to the modem, no router. When your PC is connected directly to the ethernet jack on the dsl modem it will pull an IP of 192.168.254.1 The modem is 192.168.254.254 the default password for the modem internal page is admin/admin When you see the DSL light is sync, soon as you launch IExplorer to any address it will go through an activation screen, follow the directions given. You need to use IE, FireFox will not work. It installs some activex and installs a helper exe, which you can disable afterwards. The activation will set you up with your windstream username and password. The x control installed will plug this account info for you in the PPP setup under the modem. Print off your account name and password after the activation. You will need it if you have router installed.

alright, thnx for the help.. my wifes IT guy is coming tomorrow from TX to hook all this stuff up. I say that, but she has to have a static IP, and he's going to get this NETGEAR PROsafe VPN Firewall 8 port 10/100Mbps Switch, and make sure she can log into their network however she needs.
Is the speedstream going to benefit me in any way?? or is the ZHONE ok?? I know the speedstream can more or less be a router(what i was told). What I'm trying to say is if the ZHONE is going to do the same as the Speedstream then i just won't install it and send it back. If thats the case, I'm sorry for wasting your time and I appreciate your help.

Don't have a ZHONE to give advice on. I know 4200 handles DSL2 and FAST.G modes. Guess it depends on what your DSL is connecting with. If you are using the VPN on the ProSafe you will be running the modem in bridged mode. The modem will not function as a router in bridged mode. So if both modems can handle the DSL connection with out problems, it would be your own preference. I am connecting on DSL2 with a router's PPPoE client (bridged). Because of the DSL2, I have to use the 4200 modem.
One thing I can tell you I had with the 4200; anytime the defaults are reset it needed to be reactivated. The activation process has an option screen asking if the modem was reset. The other speedstream modems I used, a hard reset would clear the stored username and accept the PPPoE from the router client no problem. This one defaults to a windstream username on reset and it would not accept my router PPPoE logon. Once the modem was activated, I went into the 4200 internal modem page and disabled the client auto connect. Hooked up the router and did a normal power cycle on the DSL modem, it took the router PPPoE and went into bridged mode. Now I've been having problems with my DSL staying connected. Many times the modem would come back up online and log on with it's own PPPoE client even when selected not to. This prevents the router doing the PPPoE if the modem is logged in with it's own client. Which is kind of irritating when depending on the router to handle the PPPoE logon. There is a hidden page to set the 4200 to bridged mode all the time but it will disable access to the modems internal webpage. You can't get to the internal page when the router is plugged in anyway but this will prevent access even when a PC is hooked directly to the modem. You will not be able to check the signal levels or logs. Only way to get back access to the modem page is a hard rest to defaults. Holding the pin in for 5 sec after the red light lights up will reset it back. Seems holding it in longer than 10 sec will not reset to defaults, only a normal reset.
Maybe because I was having some DSL issues at the same time but the 4200 seemed like PITA when compared to how the 5100 setup. More so because I use a VPN router. Lots of disconnect this, reset this, change that, switch this, etc.
