| [DIRECTV] directtv has to run separate cable instead existing on
ordered directtv and was so happy to get rid of comcast.the installer came in and looked into my house and told me he has to make holes inorder to feed thru' the cables. i'm currently using comcast in my two rooms in the second floor and he told me he cannot use existing cables. is that right? the main splitter for the cables is outside near the garage and all the cables from different rooms come out to that central location and is connected to splitter right now. my thought was they drop the satellite line in the central location and use splitter or whatever and just use the cable by tracing for two rooms. but he insisted me he has to run new cables all over my house by making holes. is that how it is done. orelse, there should be lots of problem with everyone out there who doesn't want to make holes or run two cables side by side. pls. help. thanks |

I had cable before getting DTV as well. The installer took out the cable lines and installed all new wires. The job was professional and hidden any place he could. I was so impressed you couldn't even tell I had the service installed. The cable wire installation previously was a nightmare and ugly. |

| reply to coolz The correct answer is "it depends".
It might have been possible to run the 4 cables from the dish to the location of the current splitter, and then replace the splitter with a multiswitch. But if any of the locations were getting a DVR, then a second cable would have to be run anyway.
Even that might not work if there are any other splitters inline on the existing runs.....DirecTV frequencies are generally not compatible with existing Cable TV splitters - only wideband digital splitters (especially for HD signals). |

| reply to coolz that's what i thought off. but he insisted to me he has to run another line. there's no splitter inbetween or inside the house except all the cables come out to the central hub where comcast put their splitter on to. i've about 8 lines coming out from all the rooms. i just need only two lines for two rooms that's all. i didn't order any dvr and hd only in living room which is on the first floor and standard tv in the second floor. should i consider another tech at this point.... |

| reply to coolz as long as the existing cable is rg6 then it should be fine. If you only need 2 cables he should be able to run them from the sat to your distribution area and go from there. He will need to also install a grouding block though do you have a possible ground at that location? Most home grounds are out by the utility box area, at least thats where mine is. Maybe he is wanting to run them to that location for that reason?? |

| reply to coolz he didn't mention about any grounding issue. the distance between the satellite and distribution area is around 5ft. that's it. i couldn't understand what he was explaining to me. he was keep on insisting me that he has to dig the hole and his spoken language lacks so very hard to understand for me. sorry to say this. but this is also made me hard to understand him. |

| If you didn't have the installation done - call DirecTV and get the number for the installation company. Call them up and tell them PRECISELY WHAT YOU WANT. Explain that the "other" tech was unable to communicate with you and understand your needs. If they balk - call DirecTV back and tell them that you're having a problem with their installation company. Find a local contractor who has satellite experience, and get a price quote from him. Relay that to DirecTV, and tell them you want it done right and will consider a credit (off future bills at $X/month) for having it done yourself. (Others have tried this tact successfully). |

| reply to coolz thanks. i also check my cable today and its printed as CATVX i checked few of my cables running inside and all of them printed like that. so is it RG6.... i don't see ohm...or anything like that. i just want to make sure if this should be compatible with their system beside running another line. |

| reply to coolz the other tech came in and i'd requested supervisor to come out but they never did. but this guy knew what he was doing. he tested signal of the cables and told me its good enough. mounted dish and setup reciever all set to go... that was great....... i like the pic quality...esp. hd ones. lot better than comcast. |

More than likely they sent one of their "best" techs - instead of having to send 2 people out. As long as it worked out for you - that's all that matters! |
