There are a number of them that will work.

- ushare
- fuppes
- mediatomb

Of the three, ushare is probably the simplest, but requires editting the mime.c source file when compiling to set the mime types properly for the ps3 (and the xbox360) to play back the .mp4 and .avi (xvid) files. However, it does not support transcoding.

I also had good luck with mediatomb. It supports transcoding on the fly (e.g. mkv -> mpeg2) and mime type configuration is done via the config/xml file (no src editting required).

I haven't used fuppes much, mostly because it's experimental on FreeBSD. But I hear it is good as well.

From my experience you will have to do a lot of work to get any of the PS3 compatible distros working well on the PS3. I never spent enough time with Yellowdog or Fedora to get them running with all the features. Gentoo seems to be the most up to date and compatible. I got ubuntu running very well on my PS3 also but I had to compile half the system myself. I eventually switched to gentoo since compiling everything is handled by the package manager.

I don't think he is wanting to run PS3 Linux. Rather, he's running Linux on a separate box and streaming content to the PS3.

To the OP: Any distro would be fine. I'd recommend something with relatively new package availability, since these multimedia type applications tend to change frequently.

I know that "Geexbox" is the distro that spawned the ushare project, but personally I would just stick to a mainstream distro and do a minimal install of what you need.

I've been doing some research lately on Media Server software for Linux, and although it looks like you've found what you're looking for, I'll pass this along for general info:

There is a non-free app that get's some good reviews for using PS3 and Xbox360's etc. as Media Directors, and that's Twonkyvision.

Twonkyvision Content formats

* Music: MP3, WMA, WAV, 3GP, M4A, MP4, LPCM, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, MP2, AC3, MPA, MP1, AIF, ASF
* Photo: JPEG, PNG, TIF, BMP, GIF
* Video: MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG2-TS, MPEG4, AVI, WMV, VOB, DivX, 3GP, VDR, ASF, MPE, DVR-MS, Xvid, M1V, M4V
* Internet Radio: vTuner, Shoutcast
* Playlists: WPL, PLS, M3U

The list of supported devices is pretty nice, but I post it here as an FYI only, I've never used it, and my own needs fall more in line with LinuxMCE (PVR, etc.).

1 edit

after looking into this area for a few days it seems that there are alot more better software packages with more support that are currently running on linux then windows. OR at least there more current and updated more which is the reason I am going to linux. I still have no clue what to download if I can't find anything I might just install Ubuntu

I have tooled around with the TwonkyMedia server (30 day trial) and like it. Its easy to configure (web based) and my PS3 played everything I threw at it via Twonky server.
