anon : ok I identified some of the problems. The 1.5 cap was set by Traffic Shaper XP (dumb mistake of mine) by default, which I uninstalled. Other times, it's packet loss from the RR nodes in my area.

About my router settings, I tried to access it through 192.168.0.1 and for one day it wouldn't load the page at all, then the next day it's working (the password isn't default, it's a custom one).

So about the bad routers I dunno, it seems like AT&T and Road Runner need to fix their stuff. But the 1.5 cap was set by default from Traffic Shaper XP, before I even configured anything in it (I got it to monitor connections and see if I need to set speed limits to some of the PC's on the network, in case they're causing my connection to go bad by doing too much uploading/downloading; but that turned out to be the bad routers I pointed out above).

anon : nothing, I have a few ideas that could help you out.

First, you say you have the SBV4200 modem... that modem is utter crap. Even though I believe it is capable of handling the 7Mb speeds, it's an older modem with a bunch of known issues. I once had that same modem too, and had to get it replaced when it started cutting out and dying on me all the time. You should look into having it replaced with a newer model, and most likely it will be a SBV5121 series or newer, which is an excellent modem. I can't promise this will fix your speed issues, but it could possibly save you from some irritating problems down the road.

Second, you say you are using a wireless between 3 PC's... are they all using wireless, or are some of them hard wired (physically connected) to the router by a cable. It's very possible if they are all using the wireless that there could be a lot of wireless congestion due to many other nearby neighbors using wireless (on neighboring channels). Wireless routers will generally have a series of channels you can choose from in their setup page/menu. It's ideal to use a channel that is as far away from what the majority of people are using... Ex: if most people near you are using channel 6, try using channel 1 or 11. Even though there are 11 channels, they overlap, and there are only 3 distinct 20 Mhz channels (1,6,11) all the other channels overlap between the three chunks of 20 Mhz. In my experience I find most people use linksys routers and use the default of ch6, and find in most cases channel 1 or 11 seem to work much better.

And, before you go into fixing those two possible problems, try checking your modem's interface page ( »192.168.100.1 ) and see if it lists your current bitrate. It's been a while since I had that modem so I forget if it does or not. But there should either be a reset button on the modem itself or a reset button on the modem's interface page that will let you do a hard reset, in which the modem will be forced to pull the current speed config. I had to do that with a neighbors modem a week or two ago which then allowed him to receive the 7Mb speeds. Just know it may take a few min for the modem to become operational after doing a hard reset like that.

If you can hardwire a system into the router and then check the speeds that would be ideal... I have never messed with my TCP settings, I just use the defaults in both XP and Vista, and have never received anything less than my full advertised speed from TW.

anon : I've been having major problems with lag spikes and reduced speed since the 'speed bump' came... still not sure why. We have 3 PC's connected through a MR814v2 Wireless router, and the modem is a Motorola Surfboard "SBV4200". I usually run a few different speed tests, on speakeasy and on the RR site. My speed was 3-4mbps/384kbps for a long time and did not go up with the 'speed bump upgrade' (I've restarted both the modem and router many times).

The past two weeks there have been problems with lag spikes during peak times, most noticable in games; WoW is unplayable for example. A week ago my speed seems to have been ninja-changed to 1.5/384. Yesterday, it was lowered even further to 768/384. No email or any kind of notification from Time Warner. Maybe someone in the neighborhood is being malicious and stealing/putting a cap on my bandwidth?

Anyone ever had a problem like this before?

One thing I can remember changing is auto-optimizing my TCP settings with "TCP Optimizer" to 3mbps, as I read in a previous post, and it increased my speed/stability a bit.. but this was before the 'speed bump' came. On the main RR site it says changing those settings is bad because roadrunner is supposedly optimized to run best with the default windows settings. Could this be a problem? On another computer that hasn't had its settings changed from windows default, the speed is the same slow 768/384.

I'm not sure how it would work if you just took it in for a new one, unless there was some way they could provision it before you took it home with you.

Those sound like the right speeds abward, exactly what you should see once you get it swapped out. I've heard of people having issues with the modem as well when using it without voice service. Why you aren't, I have no clue. You might be one of the lucky ones that have a 4200 series that wasn't canned during a firmware update. But I'm glad to hear you will replace it, because I don't think that particular modem will handle too much more than it already is.

Just thought I would let you guys know that I noticed here: ( »www.yourtwc.com/RR/ ) TW has RR turbo advertised at $44.90/mo for 12 months. Sounds like a fairly good deal to me (%5/mo off). I'm sure new customers to RR can get this rate, but I'm thinking if one is willing to spend some time on the phone and do some convincing, if your a longtime valued customer of RR, you may be able to get the special rate for 12 months as well. I haven't tried this yet, but I'm thinking about it... if anyone else does, let us all know if it works. :)

There have also been reports of the 4200 not handling speeds over 5 Mbps very well. Again, get it swapped out for a new one, you will be glad you did, especially if you have witnessed random disconnects (another problem with the 4200 series).

Wireless could also be a cause... but hardwired, you should see your full 7Mbps.

The SBV5121 that I have is a Docsis 2.0 modem, but the local network is still running at 1.1 as far as I am aware. When I had mine replaced, the tech told me that they have been swapping out the old SBV4200's like crazy, after they failed to update properly during a firmware upgrade.

I'm located in Cary and I just rebooted my modem a few min ago, and I'm getting a stable 7Mbps down and a standard status quo 384K up. I can honestly say I feel a bit let down about the upstream, but the downstream is welcome.

Also is it just me, or is the nc.rr.com url now redirecting to news14.com?
