[Modem] Netopia 2241N-VGx is a router too?

I noticed that I wasn't getting my ports open to windows and started to investigate. I had the firewall exception and my router (DGL-4300) port forwarding set up. I dived into my modem config page and found out that it's a semi-gateway...So as soon as I added the exception in the NAT settings for the port, everything worked fine. My modem currently has, and by default I believe, IP Passthrough, NAT monitoring and UPnP disabled. DHCP Server is enabled. The connection type is set to On-Demand. Protocol is PPPoE. VPI = 8, VCI - 35.

My question: Can I somehow disable the "router-like" functions of my modem and use it only as a source of my connection? Can't my router do everything else?

TIA,

Nick

Look for Bridge Mode in your modem if your router can do PPPoE.

If your modem is an actual retail version Netopia Model 2241N-VGx then click on the link below to the Netopia support page for the Netopia Model 2241N-VGx. You should be able to use the information there to figure out how to configure the Netopia Model 2241N-VGx as a "Bridge Modem".

If your modem is a Bellsouth customized version Netopia Model 2241N-006, which is based upon the retail version Netopia Model 2241N-VGx, then follow the instructions below to configure your modem for "Bridged Ethernet" mode and your router for "PPPoE" mode.

Refer to the D-Link Router/Westell Modem FAQ above for the complete process.

»AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »How do I properly set up a D-Link Router with a Westell Modem?

Replace "Step 3" in the FAQ with the below instructions in quotation marks.

"Click on Expert Mode from the menu and confirm that you want to enter Expert Mode. Click on Configure from the menu and then Connection in the sub-menu. Select "Bridged Ethernet" from the Protocol pull down. Click on Save and restart the connection at the bottom."

For the D-Link part of the configuration use the pictures in this reply to aid you with configuring the D-Link.

Hopefully some of this information can be of use to you or someone else that has the same modem and router as you do.
