| [DISH] TNT HD
Anyone notice the quality of TNT HD looks bad?
I have been watching a few NBA games, and the quality seems low (relatively speaking, in fact the in studio video doesn't look bad, just some of the game footage), compared other HD channels (Hockey on Verses HD, Baseball on FSN HD, etc.)
I'm not sure if it has always been like this, or this is something new. I also don't know if this is a Dish network issue, or a TNT HD issue.
EDIT: the more I watch, the more I think it is just the feeds from the remote arena's as the studio quality looks ok, which would say it is a TNT issue. -- Lightning Bolt Technologies |

| reply to LBDSL Likely it is 720 (marginally better than SD) vs 1080 (can seeindivual hairs and pours)... now if this is how TNT is providing it, or DISH is down converting is another matter.
HUGE difference (2x) between 720 and 1080. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

Of course my 720 is a 42" while my 50" is a 1080 so maybe that makes a difference as well? | reply to LBDSL I watch on Time Warner Cable.
The feeds from Toronto are horrible. It almost looksed like they were upconverting SD quality feeds to HD at some point, although it was widescreen. However they are now out of the playoffs so no more of that.
Boston's pretty bad too. It looks like there is haze spread throughout the arena.
The other arenas are pretty good on TNT. TNT in general does a way better job at sports broadcasting quality than ESPN/ABC does. Of course the best is CBS but they don't do any pro team sports! |

And the difference betwwen 720 and 1080p is not huge. It is marginal. You have to stand couple of inches away from the screen to see any difference if any. |

People that comment other wise usually do not have any HD sets or subscribe to any HD content or HD DVD's. -- "The American Indians found out what happens when you don't control immigration." |

Then you are FAR blinder than I am.... it is a huge difference even from 10-15ft away difference betwwen 1080 and 720 channels.
Now are you sure 1080 channels are actually being transmitted to you that way... or the DVD's are 1080.
Or even a TRUE 1080 the 10" larger set if it is truly a 1080 (vs the interim supposed 1080 capable still 720p (interpolated) set.
What is the NATIVE resolution of your 50" set. And is it LCD/Plasma (That have 1:1 pixel ratio) or PROJECTED (through a just few inch LCD) DLP? (Much magnified, maybe 50-100:1 pixel ratio, and short lived $500 bulb relacement) -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

And the difference betwwen 720 and 1080p is not huge. It is marginal. You have to stand couple of inches away from the screen to see any difference if any. Well lets just do the MATH
Again yes 720 is wider 4x res (1300 vs 400), but only horizantally, only about 30% better than 525.5 line NTSC SD vertical res. And even then that 4x is spead over a frame ~40% wider... so likely more like 2-2.5x better even horiz.
And why it only looks marginally better as only the horiz res is really enhanced, vertical res just 30% so so better.
Once again the MATH...
NTSC 400x525 210,000 pixels
720 ~1300x720 = 936,000 pixels or about 1MP (and over SD 85% is only the horizontal range.
1080 ~1900x1080 = 2.052,000 pixels or actually over 2x the resolution of 720. And not just 30% BETTER vertical better than NTSC, but OVER 100% and near 500% horiz.
Again BIG difference and why I question you or Wing have ever really seen a true 1080 (not 720 interpolated/ downscaled or DLP many x (like 8+) magnified) set and not seen it 1:1 for yourself.
And in fact going from 720p (couldn't even fake 1080) to supposed to be 1020p set refused/returned a 720p, FAKE 1080 capable set, identified as a TRUE 1080p set, and while it took one round of bickering... even got the $95 shipping refunded as the understood the REAL difference in those two things and how much they blew that description, and like I was not the only PO'd customer... my intent was to move from 720 to full 1080 not HALF assed downconverted
720p set that can downscale display (vs just reject 1080) is a WORLD apart from true 1080 even just i. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)
