| [OOL] Moving (IP Address)
I want to keep my IP address, but I'm moving from one apartment to another apartment. It's in the same complex, about a block or two away. Is my IP address definitely going to change if I move around the corner, or will it stay the same?
I have OOL without boost. Thanks in advance! |

| reply to Ken Peterson Thanks a lot for both of your responses. It's greatly appreciated. I tried to e-mail OOL to see what they say, and this is their response:
Thank you for contacting Optimum Online regarding your question about your IP address. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and will be happy to assist.
Optimum Online uses Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to assign IP addresses automatically. This means the IP addresses are assigned automatically and will change from time to time. To directly answer your question; Yes your IP will be different when you move and No there is no way to keep your IP address with the move. ---
So should I go with what this person is saying, or take that with a grain of salt? |

So should I go with what this person is saying, or take that with a grain of salt? What you should be doing is using dynamic DNS and not worrying about what your IP address will be. What the rep said is correct -- you're on DHCP. While it probably wont change when you move the short distance, theres nothing that prevents it from doing so. Just like it can change at any time now, you may get in the new apt and it changes 2 weeks after you move. |

| reply to weston Take the advice from RickNY and stop worrying about your IP. There should be no need to maintain the same IP address. Maybe if you provide some info on why you feel it's important, someone can recommend a solution that doesn't rely on your IP.

| Thanks a lot to everyone for the suggestions. I guess I won't care too much about it then.
Out of curiosity though, since I may need to exchange my modem when I move because it's been acting up lately, does a change in modem (no router and moving around the corner) have any impact on the IP address, or exchanging the modem in itself would have no impact on the IP address? I'm just curious. Thanks so much. |

| reply to weston I don't believe changing the modem would cause a change in your IP address. The DHCP assignment is based on the MAC of the attached device and is independent of the modem.
Changing your router would likely result in a change of IP address, unless you set the new router to use the same MAC address as the old router. -- NOTHING justifies terrorism. We don't negotiate with terrorists. Those that support terrorists are terrorists. |

| reply to weston A new modem won't result in a new IP but a while back you needed to reboot the router or computer after the new modem was connected or you would see very slow speeds for a while. Don't know if it still occurs. -- Warning, If you post nonsense and use misinformation and are here to argue based on those methods, you will be put on ignore. |

| Thanks for everyone's help. Instead of opening up a new topic, I just have another general question.
When I move into a new apartment, I'm planning on getting Optimum Voice, which I'm not very familar with. I'm not sure where the jacks are located in the new apartment, but if they aren't all in a location that's good for my phones, fax, etc., I take it that I need to have new jacks installed?
If so, could Cablevision install the jacks or they don't do that kind of stuff during installation? Before there is a suggestion about me doing it myself, trust me, you don't want to see me use a drill. I'm not handy at all. |

| With OV, there is one phone jack on the modem. You can plug your phone in there and not worry about wiring in the apartment. If the modem is convenient to a phone jack in the apartment, you can have CV set it up so the modem connects to that jack and all other jacks will be active. -- NOTHING justifies terrorism. in the case u have router make sure use the same one as well unless your new router has a feature like clone mac address |
