Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues

One more small question. I have that stupid "links" folder in IE again. Anyone remember how to remove it so it stays gone?

Just another reason to image your windows partition, I am amazed at the number fooling around with things like the registry, with imaging you do not and should not be doing this.
Since a registry change was needed for the fix, how could imaging your partition accomplish this?
It wouldn't.
It sure makes it easy to get back your machine to where it was prior to the SP3 borkification, however.

I suspect that's what the ultra-super-cool poster means. That's what I meant from my post referring to the same thing.
Thanks for the clarification.

I've been waiting superdave to explain this to me as he implied that it could.

Wow.

I think I'll wait a while before attempting to install SP3 on this AMD (home built) box. I don't have that registry key, but the trouble this is causing (this hasn't been the only issue) is beyond bizarre.

La Luna,

A retail distribution of XP (any flavor) will not have the registry issue.

The issue came about because the big box OEM manufacturers were using an identical XP image to install XP on both Intel and non-Intel processor equipped models.

If you did an installation using Setup from the CD, it would not happen.

MCE problem after SP3: ehshell.exe has generated an exception t

This is an extremely rare issue, but in the interests of thoroughness about MCE issues with Service Pack 3, I write this note.

If anyone experiences an issue similar to this description, please let me know.

I can fix this without you needing to uninstall Service Pack 3.

From a user experiencing the issue that I just helped:

quote:
MCE 2005 cannot find my dual Angel TV tuners, even though Device Manager indicates they are installed and working, with the best drivers available. Running MCE setup gives the same error messages:

quote:
ehshell.exe has generated an exception that could not be handled...
A critical MCE process has unexpectedly failed... Code: 3
Component Registration Failure: Some of the files needed to play video are missing or corrupt.
The tuner hardware is either malfunctioning or not installed
.

My "fix" for the ehshell.exe issue can be seen here:

Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues --- Note about MCE 2002

If you have not installed SP2 or any Rollups to MCE 2002, do not install SP3 until you have done so:

quote:
Windows XP Media Center Edition
This issue affects Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002.

If you install Windows XP SP3 on a computer running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 with SP1, Windows XP Media Center Edition may malfunction.

To avoid this, install Windows XP SP2 before you install Windows XP SP3.

If this issue has already occurred, uninstall Windows XP SP3, install Windows XP SP2, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3.

Best wishes,
Bill Castner

No joy here! I have tried every fix under the sun and no matter what when it gets to the “please wait” on reboot the system just hangs. I have updated three other boxes wth no problems but my main system just will not take it.

Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues

MysticGogeta,

Using System Restore to revert any Service Pack is a serious mistake.

Things may look OK, but underneath the hood you have created a real mess.

You need to get SP3 installed, if for no other reason than to be able to uninstall it cleanly.

If you do not have SP2 installed, and have not done any of the MCE update Rollups, you need to do that first.

Then install SP3. It likely will then work without issue. If it does not, then use Safe Mode and Add or Remove Programs and do a formal uninstall.

System Restore has its merits, but reverting Service Pack installations is not one of them.

Good recommendation. I did this just before installing SP3
on my homebuilt AMD system. Installed without a hitch, though
the download seemed to take quite a long time - it would come
and go in spurts.

Also, the bit about checking for activation with SP3 as noted
in the EULA did not come up at all for me after rebooting. But
I did have to update the WGA Validation Tool before I could
download SP3.

Using True Image on a system like most Compaq and HP PCs,
though, is going to be difficult if there isn't another
partition to store the image on (and the recovery partition
in most cases will be too small). In such a case, an
external HD or creation of another partition from the
free space on the main HD ought to do.

THANKS YOU! bcastner, I have been trying to fix the sp3 for hours, the registry hack did the job . HP/AMD computer.

Yes, by changing the registry you did get it installed, now what things did to fuck up now or in the future by doing so? If it were that simple MS would have done it, I have SP3-its the best OS ever but I never touch the registry, if I install an update or new program I watch it closely, if things start working funny I DO NOT USE THE ADD/REMOVE- I re-write using an image, that way you do not leave misc. fragments, unwanted file associations floating around your system, there is no reason you cannot install SP3 on any computer but you may have to actually buy the full retail, not download or OEM. Its worth the money or you can continue taking a hammer to your computer. 90% of the posts in these forums are for fixes that solve 1 problem but create others, then when things don't work down the line they blame MS when in fact they have altered the OS themselves!

ultracooldave

@verizon.net

edit- I have installed SP3 (full retail) on 4 completely different computers without any problems whatsoever. They have been running for a month now, one has 80 programs on it-I have litterily thrown everything at them and they keep ticking. I think its the best OS ever (although I am liking Leopard more and more).
beware of the validation-its even worse than Vista, many are going to fail it even though they have legal windows, another reason to buy the CD. Unless you have an image of your prior windows its going to be difficult or impossible to re-install your prior version, particularily OEM. Good luck on getting it to work talking to their "customer service" in India! They will tell you to contact the company you got your OEM from or buy a new copy.
Did you notice and read all the warnings during the install process?

The need for the registry change was because some large OEM computer manufacturers for a period of time used the identical image on both Intel and non-Intel processor machines. This was a mistake on their part. The driver should never have been made an active service on an AMD Processor computer.

Microsoft has no responsibility here. It was not their mistake. If you run Setup from the XP installation CD and install XP, it would never make this same mistake.

Microsoft has published warnings about this error by the OEM manufacturers since Service Pack 2:

You receive a “Stop 0x0000007E” error message after you upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2 on a non-Intel-processor-based computer
»support.microsoft.com/kb/888372

But the EULA for an OEM license specifies that fundamentally the support for issues of this type lies with your OEM vendor and not Microsoft.

There will be no future consequences to disabling the service from starting. It should never have been there to begin with.

PART 1 - The "Stop Service Fix"

When I start in safe mode and open a command prompt and enter this:

sc config intelppm start= disabled [note I added a space after "start=" otherwise the command only displays syntax help]

I get this message:
[SC] Openservice Failed 1060:

The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

In device manager [safe mode] I can (and did) change startup settings for ftsata2 from "Boot" to "Demand"
This is a generic Promise RAID driver, correct? I have nForce drivers installed for my single SATA drive so neither Intelppm or ftsata2 should be running or needed.

PART 2 - The "Disable Service w/ Reg Hack"

I searched the registry and do not have HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm (there is only Intelide).

If this machine does not have Intelppm (Intel Processor Power Management) service there must be something else happening.

This is a 3yr old HP/AMD machine. I restored from safe mode after the endless restart failure. Windows does seem to be working completely normal after the restore.. though I do agree there may be issues waiting to surface. The SP3 install never finished however, and the restore point I used was the same one it created during setup, so I think it might not be as problematic as restoring after completing a service pack install would be.

I'm watching over some threads in microsoft technet forums. Some people are reporting problems with STOP: C0000139 GDI32.dll - I need to wait until I reinstall SP3 again to determine exactly what stop error is occuring on my PC. Damn my impulsiveness with system restore yesterday!

And thanks for all your assistance here. Very much appreciated Bill.

Well I had the same error as Doug45 See Profile Stop:0x0000007E (0xC0000005,0xBAA98756,0xBACC342C,0x3ACC3128)

Intelppm was not in the registry before installing SP3 but it was after... I went into safe mode and used regedit to change the Start value to 4 as per your instructions. Done!
