La Luna,

A retail distribution of XP (any flavor) will not have the registry issue.

The issue came about because the big box OEM manufacturers were using an identical XP image to install XP on both Intel and non-Intel processor equipped models.

If you did an installation using Setup from the CD, it would not happen.
Ahh, I see. Thanks for clearing that up.

Come on... where's your sense of adventure?

Of course, I say this with hindsight.
I'm getting too old for this type of "adventure". Note I said "this type", other types are fine.

i have a hp pc with amd chip. i checked this Locate the entry for ftsata2 in the list. (Do not be concerned if it is not found, just go skip the rest of the step.) Click twice, click the Driver tab, and change the Startup type from Boot to Demand

and it is disabled. my pc has mce version 2002 sp2 installed on it. and i already have ie7 installed

can i safely install sp3 or will i still need to do something else before i install it?

and should i do this before installing as my ftsata is already listed as disable?

At the command prompt that will appear on a fairly empty screen, type carefully:

disable ftsata2
exit

2. Boot into Safe Mode.

Using your mouse, left click once below where it says: "Copy to clipboard":
view plaincopy to clipboardprint?

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\intelppm]
"Start"=dword:00000004

Open a new Notepad document. (Do not use a Word Processor or WordPad). Click "Format" and be certain that Word Wrap is not enabled.
Right-click | Paste the Code box contents from above into Notepad. Click File, Save as..., and enter (including quotation marks) as the filename: "RegistryFix.REG". Exit Notepad.

Double click your new file and agree to the registry merge when asked. You can then delete this new file.

Reboot to Normal mode.

You might want to read this about IE7 before attempting to install SP3:

I'm not sure if SP3 installed correctly because even though it says SP3 is installed, if I look at the end of the svcpack.log file I see the following lines:
quote:
403.141: Num Ticks for invent : 322016
403.203: [dumpDownloadTask] We have all necessary files for the package to install. Return STATUS_READY_TO_INSTALL
403.203: dumpDownloadTask returned 0xf201 (ready to install)
408.078: UnRegisterSpuninstForRecovery, failed to delete SpRecoverCmdLine value, error 0x2
408.078: DoInstallation: Failed to unregistering spuninst.exe for recovery.
408.094: Service Pack 3 installation did not complete.
408.094: Update.exe extended error code = 0xf201

The above stuff was added by update.exe after the reboot which installed SP3.

I had the "Access is denied." problem, but fixed it by using both method 1 and 3 in KB 949377.

I had uninstalled IE7 before installing SP3 and was able to install it afterwards.

Is the error code 0xf201 and the fact that it said the installation did not complete something to worry about?

This means that Service Pack 3 did not install.
This message occurs (when it does) at the end of the Setup portion.

You would have to view a larger porton of the svpack.log file to see all the issues involved.

This discussion is off-topic in this thread, so I will not comment further other than to suggest that what I would do is to contact the support line at Microsoft to handle this issue:

Just a note that the "fix" was blogged by Jesper Johannson: »https://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesper/···sp3.aspx

When I first met Jesper he was Security Program Manager, Microsoft Corporation. He, in Microsoft speak, "owned" the security aspects of Windows XP, Win2k3 Server and what became Vista and Windows Server 2008.

He adds some additional details and notes that might prove of interest to this reboot cycle issue.

Thanks, though those links are bad.

In any case I think that even though the last line in my svcpack.log says the install failed I think it actually did install. When the Windows Update install failed because of the "access is denied" error, I then installed using the full installation file. After that installed and rebooted the log file indicates that for whatever reason Windows tried to initiate the install again from the files downloaded by Windows Update which failed since SP3 was already installed.

no i just want to know if i just need to fix the 1 to a 4 or if i still need to change the fsata to demand as mine is already disabled.

and when i change the 1 to a 4 do i have to do it for all currentcontrolsets or just the first one? i found it under controlset001 and controlset003

The "fix" states:

• If you have an AMD processor, and you have the Service entry for "intelppm" set to 00000001, you have to change it to 00000004. You can use Regedit directly to do so; you can copy to Notepda the .REG script I wrote and run that; you can use Start, Run and enter the command line:
sc config intelppm start= disabled

But you have to do one of them to avoid the constant reboot issue that can happen after installing SP3.

• If ftsata2 is not found, then ignore the rest of that section of the "fix" as it does not apply to you.

From what I can make of your earlier comments, you have the proper settings for "ftsata2" but the improper settings for "intelppm", and hence that needs to be changed.

There are several easier ways than directly editing the registry suggested in the "fix". Using the command line and sc.exe is perfectly acceptable. But let me answer your regedit question.

If you are doing this prior to installing SP3, then you would modify the "CurrentControlSet" only.

If you have installed SP3 and are in the reboot loop, but can access Safe Mode, you need only again modify "CurrentControlSet".

If you cannot access Safe Mode or any other mode, then you are using something like a BartPE or WinPE to modify the registry. In that case you have to modify all the Control sets to be sure about matters; but it is a very unusual case in point of fact that at the next start attempt XP would use anything other than "ControlSet001" as the basis for creating the new "CurrentControlSet". Having said that, this also means that at the next start attempt you should not choose "Last Known Good Configuration" but only a Normal startup. (Last Known Good stores its own set of values for the LocalMachine Hive, and they would still show the 00000001 value).

It sounds like you either have not installed SP3 yet, or can at least access Safe Mode. In either of those cases, the numbered ControlSets are not important. Only the "CurrentControlSet" will effect the next startup. (It gets written at shutdown to "ControlSet001" and all the ControlSets are renumbered.

ty that does answer my question. i have 3 desktops and 2 laptops all have amd chips. so i will have to fix them before attempting to update to sp3

You most certainly will have to check them. However, if on each of them you just click Start, Run, and enter into the command line that opens:

sc config intelppm start= disabled

You would be done. It does not matter if the setting is at 00000004 or 00000001; the above command if typed carefully will make sure it is set as it must be to avoid problems when installing SP3.

(Note that the space after the "=" symbol is deliberate and necessary for this command.)

Best wishes,
Bill Castner

I'm confused... A few days ago the SP3 update was listed in my automatic updates list along with IE7... I just noticed today that only IE7 is listed... SP3 is no longer listed... But I have not downloaded or installed SP3... Where did it go??
