It did not go anywhere.
New Service Pack distributions are rationed; exit Windows Update and go back in. You might win the lottery on your second or third try. |

| reply to bcastner said by bcastner :You most certainly will have to check them. However, if on each of them you just click Start, Run, and enter into the command line that opens: sc config intelppm start= disabledYou would be done. It does not matter if the setting is at 00000004 or 00000001; the above command if typed carefully will make sure it is set as it must be to avoid problems when installing SP3. (Note that the space after the "=" symbol is deliberate and necessary for this command.) Best wishes, Bill Castner Ok Bill, I am fretting installing all this here and I seriously appreciate all the help so far you have offered. To do as you describe above, one does not have to be in safe mode, correct? ( just want to make absolute sure before doing this) and incidentally my intelppm is set to 00000003 ...as I have just looked |

Correct. The discussion about Safe Mode was only because that was the only Boot Mode possible if you did not do the "Fix" prior to installing Service Pack 3.
Since you have yet to install SP3, you are welcome to do the "Fix" in Normal mode.

| reply to Duchess44 I tried to install the sp3 update from Microsoft's site and my computer would boot to a blue screen. I had to have a tech from Friendly Computers come to my house to fix my computer. It took him about 45 minutes, and their rates were really reasonable. I am not sure what the problem was, but if you are having any problems, I recommend their services. Their site is www.friendlycomputers.com and you can find the closest location on their site. |

| reply to bcastner Question: Will changing this value before updating help prevent this problem from occurring? I'm posting this from my mom's computer, and it has that value on it, being a HP/ Compaq Presario. -- "The trouble with computers, of course, is that they are very sophisticated idiots." - Doctor Who (from Robot)

| Yes. Changing the value prior to installing SP3 will prevent the issue.
If you see that the service entry for "intelppm" exists in the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\intelppm
And, you have an AMD processor, then disable the entry:
Click Start, click Run, and enter into the command line:
sc configure intelppm start= disabled and press Enter.
(Note the blank space after the "=" symbol).
You have just ensured yourself that you will not have the problem when XP SP3 is installed. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users
