Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues

If you have Done a System Restore in Safe Mode after Installing Service Pack 3 to Avoid the Loop to Safe Mode Problem

• Do the "fix" first.
Recommended: Download the stand-alone XP SP3 installation package.
Acceptable: Use Safe Mode with Networking and visit Windows/Microsft Update for the Autmatic offering and installation of Service Pack 3.

Necessities:
• Check that any and all anti-malware utilities are in a disabled state.
• Check that you have minimum of 1,500 megabytes (MB) of free space on the system disk (the partition that contains XP).
• Logon in Safe Mode (with networking if using Windows Update). Use the logon name "Administrator" (without quotation marks). Do not use your regular logon.

Ok gotcha. Again, thank you for your patience first off, and for your help, second. I am going to give this a go. I will uninstall IE7 first, then the "fix" you have suggested, then the reinstallation of SP3. I will report back if I have any issues with any of these steps.

Auto-Update no longer offers me SP3 since restoring.

Makes me think there are remnants of SP3 on this machine even though I restored it?

Checked Add/Remove and found no instances of SP3.

Doing a System Restore will not completely remove Service Pack 3.

It is absolutely the worst possible resolution to the issue. I understand why this was done, so lets see if we can fix matters.

Download the stand-alone installation package: »download.windowsupdate.com/msdow···fde4.exe

Read my cautions from earlier in this thread -- Disable anti-malware tools, install from the Download in Safe Mode with a logon as "Administrator", be certain you have 1.5gb free space on the SYSTEM partition.

Whether it will be re-offered or not is, quite frankly, a crap shoot.

If it is, and you prefer doing it that way versus downloading the Stand-alone Installer, then it is acceptable as a means of making some order out of things.

My preference would be for the Stand-alone Installer download. (It also gives you the key item needed if you later Slipstream the Service Pack into your XP CD image).

I had the same exact experience with WindowsXP HOME. On the third pc I updated to SP3 (first two went fine). SP3 update downloads and installs then when you reboot it never fully makes it into windows. It gets stuck in a perpetual reboot unless you select safe mode.

Spent three hours with Microsoft chat support. He thought it was a hardware issue. I gave up and got some sleep.

Started over again today. Same result.

Sorry, just catching up to your excellent information. Let me see if I have this clear. I have installed SP3. Can now only successfully boot in safe mode.

I need to go into add/remove programs to remove sp3.
I need to reboot and apply the AMD Fix

Then I need to reboot and install SP3

Correct?

Wanting to get clarification here, if we have an HP Pavilion with AMD, should we do the workaround fix prior to ever trying to do install of xp sp3? I have not tried anything yet want to get everything in order first.

I have HP Pavilion AMD 513x-b
xp home sp2
IE 6

also is there an actual cd that can be obtained this time like there was for sp2?

If I cannot use the automated fix I will have to do the other. And I need clarification on something. You said in step 2: to open a cmd and type one single word. You did not say what that one single word was...

Do the "Fix" first, prior to installing Service Pack 3.

As a practical matter it would not matter. In terms of saving yourself a ton of grief, it makes a huge difference.

ok thank you for that info.

also waiting to know what the single word is that does not seem to be in the fix instructions.

greatly appreciated
