If you DID NOT use System Restore, you DO NOT have to Uninstall Service Pack 3, nor Re-install.
Do the "Fix". Reboot to Normal mode when finished.

| reply to bcastner I have 2 questions that I need answered. I need to find out what the one word you want typed into the cmd in the FIX, and I need to find out what to do if I do not have the CD's so that I can start in the recovery console. Or if there is another way to start in recovery console? |

| reply to Duchess44 I too have tried and successfully installed SP3 only for it to reboot into a crash loop. I tried going into safe mode and it crashED while on desktop back to the infamous SP3 crash loop. I have found that the "know it all" on here says it is because it installs a driver that conflicts with AMD proccessors, I happen to be an AMD user as it is the BEST processor available. I am currently and have been in the past successfully running windows xp SP2 with no problems. I will not update to SP3, I do NOT find it fair nor worth going into all the steps necessary to disable some driver that should have NEVER been installed just to have some more CRAP from Microsoft. If MS won't fix it themselves internally then I guess NO AMD user will be able to use this SP3 without going through this strenuous process, especially when most people aren't that educated in that field. UNFAIR and UNNECESSARY TO AMD USERS. Next time , IM GOING APPLE.

| reply to Duchess44 A1: The single word (missing due to a misplace bracked) was CMD. I have edited the "Fix" so that it appears now.
A2: For Recovery Console: I spent some time earlier explaining how to use Combofix.exe, and how to download the XP Setup Installation package, and how to drag and drop this onto Combofix to install the Recovery Console.
If you cannot find this discussion from earlier, please advise. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| reply to newYorkSabre Microsoft did not install the driver. The OEM computer manufacturer did.
The driver is a background power management service for Intel (only) processors.
Nothing in my discussion served to impugn AMD or its processors. The issue is not because it is using an AMD processor. The issue is that a driver was introduced at the point of manufacture that should not have been done. This issue will lie dormant until a Service Pack is done, as a great deal of reconfiguration happens during the very first boot. Nor, is it a Service Pack 3 issue. The same issue surfaced with Service Pack 2, as discussed in this Knowledge Base Article of the time:
You receive a Stop 0x0000007E error message after you upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2 on a non-Intel-processor-based computer »support.microsoft.com/kb/888372
Please show the some consideration for me and my replies in this thread. I am trying to help folks, not bash AMD. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

I am/was waiting to see how you did. Guess I will wait a bit more. I know there is a way to get this done, but I don't know if it is worth all this. I may just stick with SP2 for a bit longer |

| reply to Doug45 Doug45,
That is actually good news, as we are getting closer to having lift off.
First, check your work in Safe Mode. Click Start, click Run, and enter: regedit Navigate to the "Start" value of the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet \Services \Intelppm In the right panel, examine the value "Start" Change the 'Start' value to 4 instead of its setting of 1. To do this, right click on the value "Start" in the right panel and choose Modify.
If it does not read: 00000004 then edit it so that it does.
Now a question for you: what graphics adapter do you have, and if you remember, what is the name of the driver set you last installed for this adapter? You can check in Safe Mode with Device Manager to be certain. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| reply to storm64007 Storm,
Boot to Safe Mode with Networking. Download the SP3 Stand-alone, or head to Windows Update and reinstall SP3. If you have done that, then plese tell me what the full error message (BSOD message) you receive when you try to use Normal mode. Write the whole thing down and post it back.
In addition, what graphics board do you use, and what was the name of the last driver set for this adapter you used. You can use Device Manager in Safe Mode to check. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

1 edit | reply to Duchess44 What To Do if the "Fix" Does Not Fix Matters
Try rebooting into Normal mode at least ten times. Several have reported a different error would appear each time, until finally a clear boot was achieved. There were no issues afterwards.
The reason this happens is that during that critical first boot XP is massively reconfiguring itself. This is as intensive a process as the Operating System will make on itself. Anything that was a sleeping dog lieing on your machine as a potential issue can suddenly surface during this intensive reconfiguration exercise. Often the reconfiguration will work around it, given several tries to do so. There is also the likeliehood that the Stop Error seen at any reboot is different, as it is a new issue not seen as a predecessor issue had the floor and attention. XP can work itself out of this in many cases with multiple reboot attempts. Not always. But many times it will work the issue out itself.
1. Very important: Write down the full error message and error codes that are produced when you try to use Normal mode, and post them back here.
2. In Safe Mode, use Add or Remove Programs and Uninstall Service Pack 3. By doing a formal uninstall, you will finally reconcile matters with Service Pack 2.
If you do Step #1, then I promise to research your individual error code. Right now in three Forums I have help over 160 folks with the "Fix", and only seven have reported a problem.
There are several reasons why the 0x7E error code can be thrown after the "Fix". Which suggests two things: First, do not revert anything other than Service Pack 3. Do not undo the "Fix". Second, if you provide the details from Step #1 it is likely the issue can be resolved.
At the moment, graphics adapters and in some cases the driver set used is responsible for the 0x7E Stop Error after applying the "Fix". It is not related in any way to the "Fix", but to an older version of a file called gdi32.dll included in some driver releases. We can take care of that too, but I need to see the full text and full error code report from your attempt to use Normal mode. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| reply to bcastner Since I did this before the edit I typed sc config intelppm start=disabled exit into the run command not knowing I needed to type CMD first.
I got the STOP: 0x0000007E (0x0000005, 0xBAAA8756, 0xBACC7430, 0xBACC721C) error)
Uninstalled SP3 to gain internet access.
Now I need to do it all over again?

1 edit | dolphins,
You do not have to do anything at the moment, nor change any of the things you have done. There is no reason to re-partition for the problems you are having. The issue is not for you one of drive space.
Using the Run line from Start, Run is perfectly acceptable.
STOP: 0x0000007E (0x0000005, 0xBAAA8756, 0xBACC7430, 0xBACC721C) error is almost assuredly related to your graphics adapter.
What brand is it, and what was the name of the last driver set used to update it, if any? -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users
