| Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues Duchess, the same thing just happened on my old WindowsXP Home system.
I was lazy trying to install a service pack without properly preparing. I used MS Update to install SP3.. when it finished I restarted the computer but it would not get back to the desktop - it kept restarting. I tried "Last known good configuration" and it blue-screened. Got it to start in safe mode and now still waiting for system restore to hopefully bring me back.
I'll try to figure out where I went wrong if restore works.. probably borked because I didn't disable Comodo firewall and Avira before installing SP3.

| Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues Sounds like exactly what happened to me. It went right to the "do you want to start in the last known configuration" thing. I chose safe mode and had to system restore to an earlier time to get it back to desktop.
I didn't disable AVG when installing. Wonder if that was the issue? Probably not.

1 edit | Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues Yeah I just sat down at this machine to see if anyone else had the same thing happen. Still waiting for restore to finish...
[edit] Ok system restore worked. I'm not anxious to tackle SP3 again tonight..
Three simple steps to to take when I am ready to try again:
1. Download the full SP3 installer rather than use Windows Update.
2. Close all open programs, disconnect from the network, and disable security software.
3. Unplug all non-essential devices (printer, external hard drives, camera).
Could add: And make sure to have a recent backup.

1 edit | Promise me you will not go into Safe Mode if it happens again, and that you will not use System Restore. The choice if this happens again is to start XP in Normal mode.
1. Please check in Add or Remove Programs to see if there is an entry for Service Pack 3.
If so, Uninstall it. If you have IE7 or IE8(beta) installed, use Add or Remove Programs and uninstall.
2. Download the stand-alone SP3 package. This is 315mb, and will not be quick to download: »www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta···ylang=en
3. When the download completes, reboot, and begin tapping frequently the "F8" function key. When the boot option menu appears, select Safe Mode (without Networking). Use as the Logon Name "Administrator" (without the quotation marks). Double click your SP3 dowload to install Service Pack 3.
4. Remember that if you see the Boot Option again after a restart, please choose to enter Normal mode. When your Desktop finishes loading, reboot again.
Please advise of any issues you experienced. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

Back to you Duchess... Yes, I did too. It just kept looping back to that same screen where you have to choose which start you want.

Yes, I tried choosing Start in normal mode, or last known cofiguration. Both of them resulted in it going right back to that screen, in a loop. So I had to start in safe mode and do a restore. Um, I posted above in my last post that I did that and there is no entry for SP3. I have IE7 installed. Why do I need to remove it before installing SP3? I want IE7 and don't plan on removing it.

2 edits | Re: [MCE] XP SP3 Issues Ok so if I uninstall 7, will I have 6? Sorry if this seems a dumb question.
Also, as I said, when I rebooted the last time, it would only boot into safe mode. What if this is the issue again?
And I checked and I do have MCE 2005. It was in the add/remove programs
