Anyone Installed XP SP3 Yet?

It was released to Windows Update today. I'm going to wait a few days to make sure there's no bugs, and no issues with Firefox.

I was at a friends house last night and we saw that pop up on his machine. I dunno, they've recalled both Vista SP1 and XP SP3 a bunch of times. I'd wait for a while before installing them just to make sure they don't recall them again (though I've been running Vista SP1 since Microsoft released it on Technet and I've been good)

I've installed a fully slipstreamed SP3 on a couple new installs with no problem, but I installed the SP3 updater on a work machine and it kept rebooting into a BSOD. even in safe mode. No big deal as I have daily Acronis images.

Did one of my work machines last night. Using it now, no problems, no noticeable difference either.

I think it's mostly a rollup of all of the post-SP2 patches. Nothing terribly exciting or destabilizing.

Should knock a good 30-60 min off of the install time for XP though, which is a welcome change.

Personally I'm going to wait. There usually is mixed reactions with SP releases. I'll wait until all the bugs are ironed out.

Installed and it was rather quick and boring. No problems so far with anything.

Before you install it, you should read this posting in the MS forum:

Yes, I installed it on April 29 on one of my "play" systems that I use for experimenting with stuff. But it doesn't really buy you anything much. Remember that when SP2 came out (which had so many changes it was practically a new OS -- and is now a baseline for many products!) XP was Microsoft's star product and Billy was pulling all the stops to improve it. Now that Billy and Ballmer are flogging Vista, it's like Microsoft is going out of its way to makes sure any XP improvements are limited!

From a combination of direct experience and stuff I have read:

SP3 is in no way like SP2, which brought significant new functionality enhancements. It is essentially a rollup of existing updates; some have said it was intended primarily to help with corporate XP deployments and not particularly intended (or useful) for consumers at all. As if to underscore that point, it doesn't even contain IE7 -- so you end up with a system that looks (and works) exactly like before. Minor functionality updates include black-hole router detection, Network Access Protection (NAP) which is a corporate networking security enhancement that arrived with Vista and Server 2008, and supposedly exFAT (an enhanced FAT32 that also came with Visata) although I haven't seen official confirmation of that.

Microsoft itself describes the purpose of SP3 this way:
- Provide a new baseline for customers still deploying Windows XP, to help them avoid the inconvenience of applying individual updates.

- Fill gaps in the updates users might have missed by declining individual updates when using Automatic Updates, and to deliver updates not made available through Windows Update.
i.e.-- not very exciting. It did install with no problem and works fine though. Some issues have been reported but that was also true for SP2. The only reason for the delay in releasing it to Windows Update was that there was a known problem with a retail MS product called Microsoft Dynamics RMS. Having been officially released to manufacturing (RTM), SP3 was not changed -- the delay was to implement a filter to Windows Update to prevent RMS users from downloading SP3 (or Vista SP1) unless they installed an RMS patch first.

Installed it, computer hung on boot in both normal and safe mode, uninstalled it through recovery console.

Keep in mind my computer is over seven years old and is affectionately nicknamed Frankenstein because of all the changes I made over the years (only the mobo and CPU is original) so I won't hold it against MS - too much.

Just remember that for every bad thing said about Vista, there was someone making the exact same claims about Windows XP when Win2k was around.

I still don't understand M$ With Vista, they finally archived something good in XP and they released that OS that is worst the the plague. I don't have Vista so I cannot talk about it but my friends say that the word Vista makes them swear alot. I like the interface, the rest is whatever.
