bcastner : There are several easier ways than directly editing the registry suggested in the "fix". Using the command line and sc.exe is perfectly acceptable. But let me answer your regedit question.

If you are doing this prior to installing SP3, then you would modify the "CurrentControlSet" only.

If you have installed SP3 and are in the reboot loop, but can access Safe Mode, you need only again modify "CurrentControlSet".

If you cannot access Safe Mode or any other mode, then you are using something like a BartPE or WinPE to modify the registry. In that case you have to modify all the Control sets to be sure about matters; but it is a very unusual case in point of fact that at the next start attempt XP would use anything other than "ControlSet001" as the basis for creating the new "CurrentControlSet". Having said that, this also means that at the next start attempt you should not choose "Last Known Good Configuration" but only a Normal startup. (Last Known Good stores its own set of values for the LocalMachine Hive, and they would still show the 00000001 value).

It sounds like you either have not installed SP3 yet, or can at least access Safe Mode. In either of those cases, the numbered ControlSets are not important. Only the "CurrentControlSet" will effect the next startup. (It gets written at shutdown to "ControlSet001" and all the ControlSets are renumbered.
--
============
MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member
Users Helping Users

anon : I too am having a nightmare with SP3. I have tried all the fixes but they did not work. I do have the intelppm in my registry and did the suggested change but still no go. I have an AMD system and a Matrox millennium P650 graphics card with the latest drivers installed from Microsoft update. The install of SP3 goes fine but upon reboot it gets to the part where it displays “windows XP” please wait and hangs, no error messages. With a reset it boots to a blank screen and then after another reset it states windows did not load properly and gives you the basic options, safe mode ect. I can boot into safe mode only where I can uninstall SP3 and things go back to normal. On an interesting note even after making the registry change for intelppm from 1 to 4 after the uninstall of SP3 in safe mode and rebooting the registry entry reverts back to 1. Any ideas?

bcastner : What To Do if the "Fix" Does Not Fix Matters

Try rebooting into Normal mode at least ten times. Several have reported a different error would appear each time, until finally a clear boot was achieved. There were no issues afterwards.

The reason this happens is that during that critical first boot XP is massively reconfiguring itself. This is as intensive a process as the Operating System will make on itself. Anything that was a sleeping dog lieing on your machine as a potential issue can suddenly surface during this intensive reconfiguration exercise. Often the reconfiguration will work around it, given several tries to do so. There is also the likeliehood that the Stop Error seen at any reboot is different, as it is a new issue not seen as a predecessor issue had the floor and attention. XP can work itself out of this in many cases with multiple reboot attempts. Not always. But many times it will work the issue out itself.

1. Very important: Write down the full error message and error codes that are produced when you try to use Normal mode, and post them back here.

2. In Safe Mode, use Add or Remove Programs and Uninstall Service Pack 3. By doing a formal uninstall, you will finally reconcile matters with Service Pack 2.

If you do Step #1, then I promise to research your individual error code. Right now in three Forums I have help over 160 folks with the "Fix", and only seven have reported a problem.

There are several reasons why the 0x7E error code can be thrown after the "Fix". Which suggests two things: First, do not revert anything other than Service Pack 3. Do not undo the "Fix". Second, if you provide the details from Step #1 it is likely the issue can be resolved.

At the moment, graphics adapters and in some cases the driver set used is responsible for the 0x7E Stop Error after applying the "Fix". It is not related in any way to the "Fix", but to an older version of a file called gdi32.dll included in some driver releases. We can take care of that too, but I need to see the full text and full error code report from your attempt to use Normal mode.
--
============
MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member
Users Helping Users
