[windows] Can I burn an XP, SP3 disc on my Mac?

Toast 9 Titanium offers an option to make a Mac & PC data disc. Would it be possible to download the Service Pack from Microsoft within Leopard and then burn a CD which could be used to update my XP (Parallels) installation?

Why do you want to burn the update to a CD? you can just copy it into the Parallels windows partition by dragging the update file into the parallels window.

But yes, you can also burn it that way. The SP3 installer from MS is just a regular exe file.

You don't even need to use Toast, you can just use the Finder's built in disc burning.

I think I know it all.

You could also just share your home folder (probably on by default so look for shared drives) and navigate directly to the file from Parallels.

The reason I would want SP3 to be on a CD is so that I would not need to go through the time and hassle of downloading it again if I should need it for another purpose. For example, if I should decide to use Boot Camp instead of Parallels, I don't believe you can drag anything between the Windows and Mac partitions, since only one can run at a time.

For SP1 and SP2, Microsoft provided free CD's of the Service Packs that you could order, but it appears they are not doing this with SP3. I feel sorry for the people with dial-up or very slow broadband connections.

If you have access to somebody who has a PC (and appropriate disc burning software), you could also slipstream the service pack. That saves a lot of time for future installs.

Thanks to those who replied. I downloaded the SP, burned it to a CD-R and installed it- worked fine.

I would think that the slipstreaming could be done in XP within Parallels, but I didn't try it.

That would work if SP3 was distributed in ISO form. AFAIK, it's only downloadable as an EXE.

I will try and repackage it. I've been getting good at that lately.

I'll see if I can make an msi (if you're brave) and an iso installer.

Slipstreaming works just fine in a VM running Windows, whether you choose to do it manually (see the winsupersite.com link mentioned earlier) or choose to use nLite and have it spit out a bootable .iso ready to be burned. Pick your poison.

I can't think of way to integrate SP3 onto an existing disc "on a Mac" that doesn't involve booting Windows under VMware/Parallels.

Thanks for the suggestion of using the Terminal, but I already have Toast 9 Titanium, so I used that.
