The AVG 8 "NAG" screen has not appeared on my PC for the past 2 days...

Did Grisoft finally hear us and change something??
Nope. I just got it a few mins ago.

You can re-skin Avast, the GUI is not one size fits all. The way the program works is more important than anything else.
Yeah, I saw that, but I just don't care for the dashboard-like GUI. It's reminiscent of MusicMatch and I don't like that GUI either regardless of the skin choices.

Update (assuming anyone cares)
I am so much happier with Avira. Thx to the people who recommended it. I would have missed out had AVG not gone all bloated on us.

Ok, well, put me in the Avira camp now. Avast was sufficient -I suppose- but I didn't care for the GUI. I like Avira much better.

I am pretty pissed off with how AVG have handled both the technical side of the AVG Free v8 release and the customer relations issues (nag-screens and conflicting expiry date info). However I suppose I must be more forgiving than some other users - as I still think there is a chance they may eventually end up with a decent stable version - once all the promised fixes come through.

Maybe there is a chance they will still have a decent version but does it matter and do most people here even care anymore?
I, as well as others have already moved on.
AVG released a new version that probably still should have been in Beta, probably to keep up with the companies who have released new versions of their products.
I have not banned AVG forever but it will be a long time before I try it again.

Get Avira Premium free for 6 months, then stay with that or switch to something else (Comodo Antivirus 3 maybe).
I just installed the free version of Avira on my test rig and it sure looks like I can schedule both updates and scans on a once-a day basis. Not bad for freeware and considering its reportedly great detection rates, I may soon go Avira on all of my equipment. Stay tuned.

However I suppose I must be more forgiving than some other users - as I still think there is a chance they may eventually end up with a decent stable version - once all the promised fixes come through.

While some improvements have already been included in the current 1315 release it appears a number of significant fixes are still stuck in Beta testing.

A member of the AVG Development Team - posting under the name Vinzenz.Ewido - and several of the Beta testers - have been posting info on the Wilders Security Forum regarding the next major update to the AVG 8.0 program. Link to thread - »www.wilderssecurity.com/showthre···t=209276

Internally the AVG Team are calling this next major AVG 8 update "SP1" (aka v8.0 build 111) - this update is supposed to resolve a large number of the current problems - including some Firefox v3 compatibility issues. However as of today this is still only available to Beta testers.

With any luck this update may at last allow AVG 8 installation to be as trouble free as v7.5 has been.

Ok, well, as a result of having read the various AVG threads on this board, I decided to end my 9 yr relationship with Grisoft. I've had it with the upgrade to the bloated version 8 nag screen so I uninstalled. I'm trying out avast!, but so far, it's not all that. I liked that I could set AVG to update and scan automatically during a time of my choice, but the free version of avast! doesn't have that ability. And it also just found some nasties that stops and asks me what I want to do with it. This was also none of my concern with AVG. I just want the !@#$% to auto-run, take care of business without interfering with my apps (cough Norton cough Symantec) and leave me the hell out of it. !@#$%^ Grisoft.

From the AVG forums:

"EDIT BIG AL 43 - Also I believe that it will only apply to vdb def updates & there will be no more prog updates. Since the AVG 7.5 Free install file no longer exists on the website I very much doubt that there will be any more prog updates. In fact if you look on the website the latest vdb def update for AVG 8.0 Free is actually 270.0.0/1486 whereas the AVG 7.5 Free is 269.24.6/1486 so it looks like the avi def will not be repacked & the iavi def will be kept in line with 8.0."

Same here... I was greeted with the "new" nag screen this morning... I guess the marketing guys at Grisoft don't understand that constantly annoying us about this will not increase the odds of going for AVG 8... In fact it simply increases the chances that I will move to Avast...

I had hoped that once we were past the May 31st deadline things would become clearer, and we could coast along to the "real" deadline of December 31st.

But as of today we now have a new "official" deadline - of June 25th 2008 - displayed as of today by the installed v7.5 Free program.
New Popup - received on a system running XP Pro.

To confuse matters further I received the following email response from AVG Customer Service a few days ago:

quote:
The AVG FREE Edition 7.5 will discontinue as of May 31st 2008 however the AVG 7.5 Paid Editions will continue until December. This is not a marketing ploy.
Regards,
Jason Robins

AVG Technologies
I think AVG are having a serious communication problem - and in the process are damaging their reputation as a leading security company.

Yeah, I don't believe it's a good idea to leave anything running resident while installing a service pack like that.

How have you got round it? I installed AVG 8 and it caused me problems with internet loss. I have since uninstalled it but am still having problems with my internet connection. I have to reboot the router to be able to connect to the internet. Disconnecting and reconnecting to the router doesn't work, it has to be a router reboot. What has AVG 8 done to my settings? I'm annoyed with them, good product for years but they've lost a user here.
Do you have SP3 installed? You could try to roll it back to SP2. Removing SP3 solved my original problem. I believe that leaving AVG8 actively running while I installed SP3 may have resulted in a bad SP3 installation.

My final solution after rolling back to SP2 was to update the wireless driver; remove AVG8; install SP3 from a CD; then install AVG 7.5. No more problems.

Was this a wireless connection? Did you see an intermittent wireless connection that disconnected every few seconds and could not be made stable?

These are symptoms that I originally attributed to XP SP3, but which I now think may have been caused by AVG8 or possibly by a combination of AVG8 and an installation of SP3.

It's more than annoying on my rigs. The "nag" screen freezes both my scheduled spyware scan and email monitor. I have to use Task Manager to abort the scan and close-and-reopen the monitor. I've about had it with AVG because of this.

The AVG Free support forum states updates for AVG v7.5 will continue until December 31st 2008 - »freeforum.avg.com/read.php?1,123812
The AVG v8 Technical FAQ also gives this December date »www.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1350#faq_1350

And yet the installed (v7.5) program continues to hassle users with a garish popup proclaiming your AntiVirus will expire on May 31st 2008. AVG Technologies are well aware of this contradiction but seem to feel this is an acceptable marketing ploy. For a leading company in the security industry to resort to this kind of misleading tactics is very worrying.

The AVG 8 "NAG" screen has started to pop up again every day here... It still says that update support will stop on May 31st...
